Certified Oracle RAC Scenarios for Oracle E-Business Suite Cloning

[Editor's note: EBS cloning can be pretty involved. There are many different cloning scenarios, including cloning a RAC-based environment to an identical RAC environment, cloning from a RAC-based environment to a non-RAC environment, and adding or subtracting RAC nodes while cloning. Our Applications Technology Group has had to make some decisions about the relative priority of these scenarios. Filesystems like ASM, OMF, OCFS2, and NFS add further complexity to the certification matrix. If you would like to share your opinions about these decisions, post a comment below. Your feedback will be sent directly to our ATG Product Management team.]

Cloning an Oracle E-Business Suite system that uses an Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) enabled database involves numerous different technology components and steps, and would therefore be a complex, error-prone process if carried out manually. To speed up, simplify, and enhance the reliability of the process, Oracle offers the following tools for use in cloning RAC-enabled Oracle E-Business Suite systems:

The Oracle E-Business Suite Application Technology Group (ATG) has documented the various RAC cloning options for these tools in the following new Note:

This Metalink document will be updated periodically to reflect the support status and Development plans for different RAC Scenarios.

The Road Ahead for Cloning

While Rapid Clone will continue to provide basic cloning functionality for all EBS releases, the future direction is to provide support for advanced cloning scenarios through the Oracle Application Management Pack (AMP) for E-Business Suite (Metalink Note 394448.1) since it provides a more flexible user experience and automation for complicated clone routines.

Hi Max,

I recently raised an SR (7340555.994) to clarify the position with cloning from RAC-to-RAC using Rapdclone (we are on 11iEBS/10G RAC db) and was told a workaround was to clone to non-RAC and then RAC the target system - a laborious process.

I have checked the certification on note: 783188.1 and i cannot see that 11iEBS/10G database RAC-to-nonRAC is supported/planned. I see that RAC-to-RAC is 'planned' but only using OAM.
Can you confirm this?Any ideas when the OAM RAC-to-RAC approach will be supported?
What would you advise for a client that has a Production 11iEBS/10G RAC system and needs to clone this OFTEN both to create RAC and non-RAC systems?

Publicly posting Max's response here, since it's of general interest:

We are always looking for ways to provide better cloning experience.

We are actually in the process of publishing a Metalink Note to provide instructions on how to clone 11i/10g RAC environments. When published, the rest of the Rapid Clone documentation will reflect the same.
The Note will be published in the next [few] weeks.

Stay tuned.

Hello Guru,

I've cloned a single node system to my target system, but facing an error during post cloning, where when running the adcfgclone.pl appsTier gives me an "ERROR"( Error occured during Initillization of vm java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/object), i have successfully configured the database Tier. May i receive some help.

We are following the note#760637.1 to do RAC to RAC cloning for our ERP with 11G cluster. We have done the cloning but I think it is not supported when the number of nodes in the source and destinations are different. We have raised a SR and they also mentioned the same.

Could you please let us know if there is any alternative suggestion to do the cloning or we can devise our own method?

You might want to consider using Applications Management Pack for E-Business Suite (AMP). AMP will support Scale In/Out in future versions.

Hi Steven,

We have 12.1.2 on RAC. We would like to convert this RAC environment to non-RAC.

Could you please let us know your valuable suggestions?

Thank you for your post. It's worth to clarify it. At this point AMP 3.1 only supports cloning RAC-to-NonRAC in 11i environments. For R12 the option will be available in future releases. We are also considering that option to be available in the command line as well.

How to clone ebs non-rac db to rac db?

Posted by Purnachandra Gade on April 11, 2016 at 04:45 PM PDT #

In the last one, the db is in both source and target.
But source is non-rac DB on RHEL6 64bit and target being ODA.
