Best Practices for Upgrading to Release 12

If you've been considering the best way to upgrade your E-Business Suite Release 11i environment to Release 12, I strongly recommend that you check out Eugene Weinstein and Nigel Cooper's excellent OpenWorld 2007 presentation:

Supported R12 Upgrade Paths: Supported upgrade paths from E-Business Suite (Applications) 11.0, 11.5.1 to 11.5.10 to Release 12

Eugene and Nigel cover the following topics:
  • Overview of the R12 Upgrade process
    • The R12 filesystem
    • Supported upgrade paths
    • Technology improvements
    • The R12 upgrade flow
    • Options for omitting the upgrade of historical data (Upgrade by Request)
  • Best practices for the upgrade
    • Staffing & planning
    • Pre-upgrade, upgrade, and post-upgrade tips
Perhaps most significantly, Eugene and Nigel discuss Oracle's own experiences in upgrading our 10 TB Global Single Instance from Apps 11i to 12.  Upgrading an Apps database with over 28.5 billion rows of data is a serious undertaking, and it's always instructive to see how the best Apps IT organization in the world does things.

Highly recommended reading, even if you've already performed one or more test upgrades already.

Hi Steven, I have the follow scenario:
11.0.3 + 8.1.7 in AIX 4.3.3
I would like to and in the future to R12 in Linux.

The best way to do this is: 11.0.3 to in AIX after this migrate to Linux using DocID: 238276.1 ? Or is there another way to do this upgrade?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Tiago,

Upgrading on your existing platform first is the safest method. Once you're running Apps 11i on AIX, then it's fairly simple to switch over to Linux following Note 238276.1.

Good luck with your upgrade.

Hi Steven.
This is very good PDF.

I have the follow scenario:
We are with some Products in 11.5.10, others in 11.5.9 and others in 11.5.7 and 11.5.8 release.

I would like to upgarde to r12.
What do I need to do?
I need bring up all products to with patch 3480000 and after this upgrade to r12?
Or Can I upgrade this situation directly to r12?

Thank you.

Hi, Tiago,

I'm unclear on what you mean by this. If you have multiple E-Business Suite environments, each on different E-Business Suite versions (11.5.7, 11.5.8, 11.5.9), then each of those separate environments must be upgraded to before upgrading to R12.

If you have different products within a single E-Business Suite environment, then they are all considered to be at whatever maintenance pack level that you've applied to the entire environment, regardless of the individual product family updates applied.

Hi Steven,

We are currently on EBS 11.5.8 with database. With respect to technology stack we are on level. Can we take the upgrade path specified for as mentioned below for R12.1.1 upgrade.

(Upgrade database to 11gR1, then upgrade the application to R12.1.1)

Hi, Suresh,

I confess that I am not tracking R12.1.1 upgrade paths closely enough now to make a recommendation on this. Your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.

Please feel free to forward your Service Request number to me if it gets stuck in the support process for some reason.

Hi, Krishnamoorthy,

I see that you've asked the same question on two other OTN Forum, and that you've gotten a detailed reply from Hussein pointing to the appropriate Oracle documentation as well as extra documentation provided by EBS users themselves. In case you missed his reply, it's here:

If you have any questions about the official Oracle documentation, feel free to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our upgrade specialists engaged.

Good luck with your upgrade.

Hi, Alexandre,

All OpenWorld links have a limited shelf life. The OpenWorld organizers pull the content after about 18 months. That 2007 presentation is no longer available.

I strongly recommend this whitepaper, which has all of those details and more:

Whitepaper Update: Planning Your E-Business Suite 11i Upgrade to R12.1 (Third Edition) (Oracle E-Business Suite Technology)

Hi Steve,

We have a very stable eBS 11.0.3 applications version and we want to keep it plus the DB.
The idea is only to upgrade machine FROM: server HPUX OS to a new server LINUX OS .

1. Is this acceptable ? Will this work ?

2. If yes, which Linux version is certified with 11.0.3 ?

Thank you in advance.
