Microsoft Office 2013 Certified with E-Business Suite 11i

[Nov. 11, 2014 Update: Microsoft has confirmed that Office Home & Student Edition is built on a different codeline that lacks the APIs that are needed for EBS integration. Article updated to exclude this edition explicitly.]

Microsoft Office 2013 was previously certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 12.0.6 and 12.1.3

We are pleased to announce that Office 2013 is now certified with EBS 11.5.10.2.  For details, see:

EBS 11.5.10.2 + Microsoft Office 2013 (32-bit)

Microsoft Office 2013 32-bit desktop version is certified for integration with Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10.2 for the following desktop client operating systems:

  • Windows Vista 32-bit
  • Windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit

This certification covers Office 2013 in 32-bit mode only.  There are no plans to certify Office 2013 64-bit with EBS 11i.

What about EBS 12.2?

The certification of Microsoft Office 2013 32-bit and 64-bit for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2.x is still in progress.

When will the remaining combination be certified?

Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog. I'll post updates here as soon as soon as they're available.   

How does the E-Business Suite work with Microsoft Office?

The Oracle E-Business Suite is comprised of several product families such as Financials, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources, and so on.  These product families group together collections of individual products.  Some of these products may be optionally integrated with one or more Microsoft Office components such as Excel, Word, and Projects.

Individual E-Business Suite product teams have the option of building integrations between their products and one or more Microsoft Office components.  This is not mandatory.  Over forty E-Business Suite teams offer these kinds of Office integrations today.

Examples of these integrations include:

  • HRMS Payroll integrations with Microsoft Excel
  • Supply Chain Management Contracts Core integration with Microsoft Word
  • Financials General Ledger (GL) integration with Microsoft Excel
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Proposals integration with Microsoft Word
  • Web Application Desktop Integrator (Web ADI)
  • Desktop Integration Framework
Which Office versions are certified?

We will explicitly test the Office 2013 Professional edition with Oracle E-Business Suite.  We expect that the results of these certification tests apply equally to the following desktop-installed editions:
  • Home & Business 2013
  • Standard 2013 
  • Professional 2013
  • Professional Plus 2013
We do not currently plan to certify the following editions with Oracle E-Business Suite:
  • SkyDrive-based documents
  • Office On Demand
  • Office Web Apps
  • Office 365
  • Office Home & Student RT
  • Home & Student 2013 (Known not to work with EBS)

What about OpenOffice, StarOffice, LibreOffice?

We have no plans to certify the E-Business Suite with versions of OpenOffice, StarOffice, LibreOffice, or other equivalents.

E-Business Suite Plug-in 12.1.0.3 for Enterprise Manager 12c Now Available

Oracle E-Business Suite Plug-in 12.1.0.3.0 is now available for use with Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.  Oracle E-Business Suite Plug-in 12.1.0.3 is part of Oracle Enterprise Manager 12 Application Management Suite for Oracle E-Business Suite.

This latest plug-in extends EM 12c Cloud Control with E-Business Suite specific system management capabilities and features enhanced change management support.

The Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Application Management Suite for Oracle E-Business Suite includes:

  • Functionality that was available in the previously-standalone Application Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite and Application Change Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite
  • Oracle Real User Experience Insight
  • Oracle Configuration & Compliance capabilities  

Licensing information  

A license for Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control is required to use this product. There is an additional licensing cost for the Application Management Suite for Oracle E-Business Suite.  A license for the Application Management Suite includes licenses for the E-Business Suite Plug-in, Oracle Real User Experience Insight, and Oracle Configuration & Compliance products.

This is a Development blog, and we don't have the background to discuss licensing in more detail.  We'd recommend contacting your Oracle account manager for more information about licenses.

Updates to product bundling

Features that were previously available in the standalone management packs are now packaged in the Oracle E-Business Suite Plug-in, which is certified with Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control: 

  • Functionality previously available for Application Management Pack (AMP) is now classified as “System Management for Oracle E-Business Suite” within the plug-in.
  • Functionality previously available for Application Change Management Pack (ACMP) is now classified as “Change Management for Oracle E-Business Suite” within the plug-in.

The Application Configuration Console and the Configuration Change Console are now native components of Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Administration/Configuration/Monitoring

  • Privilege Propagation Using Administration Groups: Privilege propagating groups enable administrators to extend privileges to members of a group. For example, if new targets are later added to the privilege propagating group, then the administrators receive the privileges on the target automatically. Additionally, when a new administrator is hired, you only need to grant the role to the administrator for the administrator to receive all the privileges on the targets automatically.
  • Oracle E-Business Suite Region in Exalogic Dashboard: An Oracle E-Business Suite summary region is included on the Exalogic Dashboard.
  • Configuration Comparison Templates: Configuration comparison templates allow customers to compare Oracle E-Business Suite technology configurations of two or more Oracle E-Business Suite environments.
  • Certified Monitoring Templates: Out-of-the-box monitoring templates allow you to standardize monitoring settings across Oracle E-Business Suite environments by allowing you to specify metric thresholds to monitor E-Business Suite services, components and technology stacks.
  • Performance Monitoring: Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 customers can diagnose performance issues by using Java Virtual Machine (JVM) Diagnostic integration. Customers can monitor live and historical transactions and drill down from end user activities through all layers of technology, including Real User Experience Insight (RUEI), WebLogic Suite (WLS) and database.
  • Integration with Service Test Infrastructure: Administrators can define service tests and beacons using Oracle Application Testing Suite (OATS) to determine the availability of Oracle E-Business Suite services. Pre-seeded service tests can be used to ensure that Oracle E-Business Suite services are available for users.
  • Extended Target Modeling: Administrators can now easily add Fusion Middleware components that are externally-integrated with Oracle E-Business Suite to the availability definition.
  • Blacking Out Patch Edition in Oracle E-Business Suite12.2: Patch edition targets are automatically blacked out in Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 to prevent false incidents.

Compliance Framework

  • Out-of-the-box Oracle E-Business Suite Compliance Standards: In addition to the seeded security compliance standards delivered in the previous release, we have added new compliance standards that check for mandatory database configuration parameters (init.ora) for Oracle E-Business Suite.

Customization Management

  • User Defined Customization Standards: Customers now have the ability to define their own standards to validate customizations and create packages according.

Patch Management

  • Patch Promotion Policy: Patch Manager now allows customers to create patch promotion policies for applying patches onto pre-production systems before applying them to production systems

Automated Cloning

  • Cloning support for Oracle E-Business Suite R12.2: Multi-node cloning, scale-up or scale-down cloning, and shared file system cloning is supported for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.

Quick Provisioning of E-Business Suite

  • Oracle E-Business Suite Assemblies: Customers can now provision Oracle E-Business Suite Instances quickly using Oracle Virtual Assemblies delivered for EBS 12.1.3 and EBS 12.2.

Installation & Upgrades

  • Customers currently running on Enterprise Manager 12c, can use Self Update to download and install AMP 12.1.0.3.0.

Latest Updates to AD and TXK Tools for EBS 12.2

We continue to release updates to EBS 12.2 technology stack (TXK) and Applications Database (AD) patching tools based upon customer feedback.  We released the first set of updates in March 2014, the second set in May 2014, and have just released a third set of critical updates.

This latest update includes important enhancements and fixes to the Online Patching functionality.  All Release 12.2 users are strongly encouraged to apply these new updates as soon as possible.  These patches are cumulative: they include all AD and TXK-related fixes released in previous updates.

The updates and few features to Online Patching include:

  • New 'standard' cleanup mode - An optimized default cleanup mode, available in addition to the 'quick' and 'full' cleanup modes.
  • Log Analyzer Utility - Analyzes adop log directories for errors and warnings, and displays messages to help you identify any problems in an adop run.
  • New 'cm_wait' parameter - Allows you to specify how long to wait for concurrent processes to finish, before shutting down the Internal Concurrent Manager.

Critical Patch Update for July 2014 Now Available

The  Critical Patch Update (CPU) for July 2014 was released on July 15, 2014.  Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities, and links to other important documents.

Supported products that are not listed in the "Supported Products and Components Affected" Section of the advisory do not require new patches to be applied.

Also, it is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches, as this is where you can find important pertinent information.

JRE 1.7.0_65 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Java logoJava Runtime Environment 1.7.0_65 (a.k.a. JRE 7u65-b19) and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2 for Windows-based desktop clients.

Effects of new support dates on Java upgrades for EBS environments

Support dates for the E-Business Suite and Java have changed.  Please review the sections below for more details:

All JRE 6 and 7 releases are certified with EBS upon release

Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline, and from JRE 7u10 and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 and JRE 7 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 and 7 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team. 

You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 or JRE 7 releases to your EBS users' desktops.

What's new in this release?

JRE 1.7.0_65 (7u65-b19) is a CPU release. If you are running on the JRE 7 stream, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to this latest version of the JRE 7 Plug-in.

32-bit and 64-bit versions certified

This certification includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit JRE versions for various Windows operating systems. See the respective Recommended Browser documentation for your EBS release for details.

Worried about the 'mismanaged session cookie' issue?

No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances.

The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases on the JRE 6 and 7 codelines.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22 on the JRE 6 codeline, and JRE 7u10 and later JRE 7 codeline updates.

Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice

After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support .

What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users?

EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates from February 2013 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.

In other words, nothing changes for EBS users after February 2013. 

EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 until the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.

How can EBS customers obtain Java 6 updates after the public end-of-life?

EBS customers can download Java 6 patches from My Oracle Support.  For a complete list of all Java SE patch numbers, see:

Both JDK and JRE packages are contained in a single combined download after 6u45.  Download the "JDK" package for both the desktop client JRE and the server-side JDK package. 

Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients?

This upgrade is highly recommended but remains optional while Java 6 is covered by Extended Support. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients. 

Java 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All E-Business Suite customers must upgrade to JRE 7 by June 2017.

Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops

The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite.

Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290807.1 and 393931.1.

Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops

Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed.

Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed. 

JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. The Jave SE CPUs will be available via My Oracle Support.  EBS users can find more information about JRE 6 and 7 updates here:

What do Mac users need?

JRE is used for desktop clients.  JDK is used for application tier servers

JDK upgrades for E-Business Suite application tier servers are highly recommended but currently remain optional while Java 6 is covered by Extended Support. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6 for application tier servers. 

Java SE 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All EBS customers with application tier servers on Windows, Solaris, and Linux must upgrade to JDK 7 by June 2017. EBS customers running their application tier servers on other operating systems should check with their respective vendors for the support dates for those platforms.

Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice

After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support .

What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users?

EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates from February 2013 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.

In other words, nothing changes for EBS users after February 2013. 

EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 until the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017. 

How can EBS customers obtain Java 6 updates after the public end-of-life?

EBS customers can download Java 6 patches from My Oracle Support.  For a complete list of all Java SE patch numbers, see:

Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients?

This upgrade is highly recommended but remains optional while Java 6 is covered by Extended Support. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients. 

Java 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All E-Business Suite customers must upgrade to JRE 7 by June 2017.

Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops

The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite.

Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290807.1 and 393931.1.

Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops

Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed.

Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed. 

JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. The Jave SE CPUs will be available via My Oracle Support.  EBS users can find more information about JRE 6 and 7 updates here:

What do Mac users need?

Mac users running Mac OS X 10.9 can run JRE 7 plug-ins.  See this article:

JRE is used for desktop clients.  JDK is used for application tier servers

JDK upgrades for E-Business Suite application tier servers are highly recommended but currently remain optional while Java 6 is covered by Extended Support. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6 for application tier servers. 

Java SE 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All EBS customers with application tier servers on Windows, Solaris, and Linux must upgrade to JDK 7 by June 2017. EBS customers running their application tier servers on other operating systems should check with their respective vendors for the support dates for those platforms.
