What 25 UK Startup Companies learnt from the chairman of a $14BN Startup

Roll the drums please.....

I had the pleasure of hosting 25 of my UK Startup Essential customers and supporters last week at an informal session with Scott McNealy. As with all these types of things, never work with children or chairmen, you never really know what to expect and how it will turn out, or what will be asked, so with nervous palms I introduced Scott, stepped back and waited for the questions.....

Silence, pure silence, then Scott talked about what he had been up to, how he was enjoying England and now ask what you will, then the questions came thick and fast for over an hour, with the companies present engaging and questioning from all angles this was turning out to be fun and I can keep my job.

So what were the main points that were taken away from the assembled audience :

  1. Always use someone else’s money

  2. To lead you need to have 9 to 11 direct reports, fewer and you’re a manager

  3. Get rid of the problems (people) as soon as you can, if not sooner

  4. Always use someone else’s money

  5. The cloud will know

  6. Go big and

  7. Always use someone else’s money

I can vouch that at drinks afterwards the buzz and atmosphere was electrifying from the overall discussions not only with Scott but between all the guests as well, who got more than I think they expected out of this. If you wish to see the video of the event, wait for a week then check back on the Startup Essential web site and if you are a UK startup reading this, why aren't you in the programme, you could have been one of the 25.

If you wish to read a dialogue of the event and what one of the attendees gained from the hour, please go to Oli's blog for a fantastic read.
