Startup of the Day : UShareSoft

Can you introduce the team ?
UShareSoft has been created by 3 former Sun employees. After a one-year incubation period in the GRAIN organization, UShareSoft was officially created in August 2008. That same year, the technology developed inhouse received an award by the 10th national contest for the support of innovative start-ups organized by the French ministry of research and universities (OSEO).

What is UShareSoft?
UShareSoft delivers a software appliance factory, formally named UForge and a set of enterprise-class tools allowing users to create high quality business-ready software images. Our mission is to make it easy for developers, communities and professionals to deliver their software into easy to use physical, virtual or cloud images. We  enable users  to  visually  in  a  few  simple  clicks,  create,  assemble,  customize  and maintain  high quality  IT pre-configured software stacks,  including all you need  to automatically generate  ready-to-run  software  images. UShareSoft is helping users to make their IT software solutions very simple, consistent and predictable to install and deploy in the field. This factory helps reduce costs and accelerate the time to market for software.

Where are you in terms of development?
UShareSoft is currently in a development and public launch phase. Muliplying strategic partnerships and  developing a large community of users are key objectives for the coming months. Headquarters are located in France, with an R&D Center in Argentina (Buenos Aires) and offices in the USA (San Fransisco).

Why join the Sun Startup Essential program?
UShareSoft wanted to join the program to leverage Sun's network and participate in co-marketing initiatives.

What are your next steps?
UShareSoft is willing to develop its partner network with the main customers, ISVs and System Integrators, as well as virtualization actors and Cloud Providers. In parallel, a community and ecosystem of users including individual developers and open source communities will be developed. A first parnership with the OW2 Open Source community has already been signed.

Thanks and good luck!

Startup of the day: Teambox

Pablo, can you introduce yourself?

I am a 23-year old spanish entrepreneur, aerospace engineer and programmer. In the past I managed two start-ups for e-learning and helicopter drones. Today, I'm a passionate Ruby on Rails programmer working full-time for Teambox.

What is Teambox?

Teambox is an agile project manager. It's an open-source collaboration application for groups that takes a different approach at teamwork.

In Teambox, collaboration is project-centric, rather than document-centric (like Google Docs). Inside each project, members can share group messages, task lists and pages.

You can use it for free at http://www.teambox.com, and enjoy unlimited collaboration: Any number of projects, and unlimited uploads.

At what stage are you in your project?

Teambox has been self-funded and Business Angel funded. We are currently looking for a round B of capital to fund the growth and expansion of the startup.

Teambox 1.0 has been online and running for almost a year. Teambox 2.0 is already in the works, featuring a group-twitter collaboration approach and many mobile apps: Android, iPhone, light version and XML and JSON APIs.

The whole project is open-source, and available as a free hosted service at http://www.teambox.com. We have, to the moment, three quite active open-source contributors, five people in our staff and some freelancers. We are currently based in Barcelona, Spain.

Why did you join the Sun Startup Essentials program?

We joined, introduced by Manuel Jaffrin, to benefit from the support program. Every technology we use is open-source: Ruby on Rails, MySQL and servers for our background processes. We've been interested in scaling and new key-store database technologies, and we felt a partner like Sun could be interesting for the future of our app.

What are the next steps for you?

After some weeks, Teambox 2.0 will be released as a major breakthrough in collaboration software. It will then be time to market and start offering the first premium services: invoicing integration and installation support.

In the financial side, we're looking for our next round of funding and looking forward to offering live support to paying users.

Pablo, thanks for your testimonial and good luck for the future!

Guns for Hire......

Linux systems administrator: gun for hire

I'm a contract Linux systems administrator with 9 years of experience
working with startup companies. My main areas of expertise are in
scalability, high availability and monitoring. Most recently I've been
working with Songkick.com to put in place a new architecture on which we
launched the new version of their site. Before that, I was with Trutap
where we built a scalable platform for mobile social networking.

I'm looking for new challenges with interesting companies. I tend to add
the most value to companies who have an established website built, and
who are expecting a period of growth - taking an existing site, and
building a systems architecture which is fault-tolerant and scalable; as
well as ensuring development staff have access to a development and
staging environment that closely resembles production.

\* Can one of your servers go down without any interruption to
        service?
\* Can you handle 10x your current load on your existing platform?
\* Do you know how you'd grow your infrastructure to cope with 100x
        your current load?
\* If something goes wrong on your platform, do you know about it
        before your users do?

If your answers to the above are either "no" or "I don't know", then
drop me a line - it's likely that I can help.. - jon@topper.me.uk

McNealy Unplugged: Tips for Startup Success

A little while ago, Scott McNealy gave a fun keynote at the Plug & Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale. He's always entertaining and unorthodox when he gives tips to startup companies in the audience.  Here's a summary:

Tip #1: Come up with a counter-intuitive idea, otherwise, chances are someone else is already running with it (and not being that successful).

Tip #2: Break the rules of business without being unethical as it will help you attract the brightest talent.

Tip #3: Don't be greedy when looking for funding as limited funding will force you to be creative and efficient.

Tip #4: Embrace a cause to motivate your employees as humans are not just coin-operated.

Tip #5: Marry the right person possibly after you launch your startup.

Enjoy the video.
