Helsinki, Slush and more Slush
By Stewart Townsend on Nov 26, 2008
Lots has been happening the last few weeks, but the main thing for me has been launching Startup Essentials in the Baltics and I had the pleasure of being invited to attend and speak at the event. We launched Startup Essentials to an audience of over 300, and sponsored the after party drinks to help the conversation flow, and flow oh and flow.
So yes it was a startup event, but what made this different and made me proud to be part of it was this :
- The sponsor money goes into a slush pot
- The Startups who have been successful, who exhibit, their money goes into the slush pot.
- The people who pull this together are the main people in the Finnish startup scene, all do this for FREE.
The slush pot, then goes to the Three startups that were selected on the day as the winnners of the Slush 7, an idea that I think is really great and helps support more companies to startup and grow, then do the same over and over again. Its own eco system, self supporting and growing, which is just a real amazing idea, so simple, but just works
One of the funniest stories was from Petteri Koponen, he told us how he was forced to ask his hairdresser for a ride because he was running late for a meeting with a top VC firm. Of course, the fact that a hairdresser was so enthusiastic that he drove Petteri to all his VC meetings across Silicon Valley didn’t go unnoticed, with one firm so impressed that they came out to the parking lot to meet up, this had the audience in stitches.
Ill write up a post on the Startups there and the Finnish startup scene, but it has to be said, Helsinki and startups, yep a vibrant place.
