We are coming to the end of another year. At the Dev Gym, that means that we will soon have the final rankings for our tournaments in SQL, PL/SQL, Database Design and Logic. The top 50 players in each will compete in a championship in early 2021 for top honours.
We are also going to change how our tournaments (ranked quizzes) will work in 2021, to reflect the changing patterns of activity on the Dev Gym. Here's the "bottom line", with explanation to follow:
Starting on January 9, 2021, the Dev Gym will offer two tournament quizzes: Oracle Database and Logic.
In other words, there will no longer be separate quizzes for SQL, PL/SQL and Database Design.
This site began in 2010 as the PL/SQL Challenge, and we offered a daily PL/SQL quiz. We then added a weekly SQL quiz, and then the others. When Steven Feuerstein rejoined Oracle in 2014, the PL/SQL quiz also went to a weekly cadence.
Since that time, we've added workouts and classes to the Dev Gym. The quiz library has grown to more than 3,800 quizzes, including quizzes on Java and Application Express. Many more users of the site use these educational resources, compared to the competitive tournaments.
We also realized that we often covered the same topics and features in our weekly quizzes that are already present in our enormous library of quizzes.
Recognizing all that, and wanting to make the best use of the time of our quiz authors, we will shift to a combined Oracle Database quiz. This will focus on testing knowledge of the newer features of the database (from Oracle Database 18c onwards).
And starting in 2021, we will start including Oracle Database 19c features in the weekly database quiz, as well as the championships for 2020 play.
The weekly logic quiz, authored by Eli Feuerstein, will continue as before, but we will introduce a greater variety in the types of quizzes offered.
We will then have just two championships, instead of the four that will happen in 2021.
We realize that some of our dedicated players will be disappointed. We hope, though, that they and all other users, will enjoy the wider scope of topics covered in the new quiz, the focus on newer features, and the extra workouts and classes that will be offered on the site.
