Don't let "Your unqualified host name" to get on your nerves

One thing that has always bugged me while booting Solaris is the warning that it shows during early booting process:
My unqualified host name (SDG-Solaris) unknown; sleeping for retry

Now this is one error message that will haunt you every-time you boot your machine and slowly it really gets on your nerves. So I finally I decided to put it right.

This error comes since a service called sendmail is running in your Solaris system. Sendmail is used to send outgoing mail from your system and it requires a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). Now most of our system names have a host name as solaris-devx by default (in my case it is SDG-Solaris) and of course it doesn't qualify as an FQDN. Thus since we know the problem, we can solve it in two ways.

Firstly we can give our system a FQDN. For that we need to edit the file /etc/inet/hosts. Now this file has entry in the following format:

So to change the domain name, you need to give this file a write permission and then go on to change the second word to any FQDN eg mydomain.com Save the file and reboot, the warning should no longer appear.
To change permission: chmod u+w hosts

Then using the vi editor (or any other text editor) change the second element from solaris-devx (SDG-Solaris in this case)

To any FQDN (sdg.mydomain.com in this case):

On the other hand you may disable the sendmail service.
To check the current status of sendmail on your system type out svcs sendmail. If sendmail is "online", type the command svcadm disable sendmail to disable it and this will also put an end to this warning at startup.

Now you can enjoy a warning-free boot process, at least I am enjoying that for now.
Comments:

Thanks alot! I finally fixed it on my FreeBSD server! It was annoying me to death because it just wouldnt let me SSH if i didnt ctrl-c the error.
