VirtualBox and the ZFS Demonstration Tutorial

The ZFS Demonstration Tutorial is an excellent resource, however, many are probably put off by the requirements necessary to complete it: "You need a minimum of four disks, preferably five or more and if possible, all the same size." As my teammate Gregg would say - Yowza! The good news is that VirtualBox makes this REAL easy. If you do not already have OpenSolaris running under VirtualBox, follow Running OpenSolaris Using VirtualBox to get started. Once you have OpenSolaris...

Which disk device to use for fdisk?

OpenSolaris uses quite an interesting format to describe disk devices which originates from the SPARC world and it may be very confusing to anyone who tries to understand Solaris disk devices on x86 or x64. You've probably seen strings such as "c0t0d0s0" before. Until recently I had a hard time to figure out which devices are available on my computer. For example if I want to run fdisk, I need to know the disk device file name. So I studied the format of the string and found...

Dealing with the Trash

Today I decided to empty my trash and ran into the following error: It turns out that there are some files with only root permissions in my trash: bleonard@opensolaris:~/.Trash/OOo_2 (copy).4.1_Solarisx86_install_wJRE_en-US$ ls -ltotal 25drwxr-xr-x 2 bleonard staff 4 2008-05-29 15:40 licensesdrwxr-xr-x 3 root root 5 2008-06-25 09:28 nonedrwxr-xr-x 31 bleonard staff 31 2008-05-29 15:40 packages-rwxr-xr-x 1 bleonard staff 13829 2008-05-29 15:40 setup-rwxr-xr-x...

OpenOffice Associations

Unlike the approach that Brian used, I have decided to stick with OpenOffice version 2.4, which I was able to easily install as Brian described in the first part of his blog entry. After the install, though, I noticed a problem.  No associations had been setup between the OpenOffice file types and the OpenOffice binary that had just been installed.  There is a bug filed for this, so hopefully it will be fixed in a future release.  In the mean time, there is an easy workaround. ...
