March 18th, 2014: Virtual Sysadmin Day for Europe, Middle East, and Africa

In case you're new to this: the Oracle Technology Network Virtual Sysadmin Days are a series of hands-on, proctored labs for systems administrators, brought to you on the web.  They're free, although you do need to register, and there is some prep work you need to do beforehand.

The next one in the series is coming up on Tuesday, March 16th and will start at 9 AM GMT, so we're calling this the "Europe/Middle East/Africa" edition, although we never discriminate -- jump in from wherever you are then, and we'll be there.

As always, you'll have three tracks to choose from: Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, and Oracle VM. The theme for this edition's Oracle Solaris session is the typical tasks and challenges of a sysadmin's daily life.

If you want to get a head start, there are some recordings of previous Virtual Sysadmin Day events on the Oracle Solaris YouTube Channel.

Register for the event, browse the recordings, do the prework, and join us on the 16th!

Happy New Year! Happy Upcoming Virtual Sysadmin Day!

As we join 2014, which is already in progress, we get to offer yet another free online training opportunity: the latest round of OTN's popular Virtual Sysadmin Day series.

As with previous sessions, it's a half day of online, hands-on, proctored labs -- three parallel tracks for Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, and Oracle VM administrators.  It's free, but you do need to register, and there is some prep work you should do before the actual event, so sign up now, and get ready to roll.

Don't Forget: July 15 is Virtual Sysadmin Day!

There are those who cynically claim that Virtual Sysadmin Day is just something made up to sell greeting cards and flowers, but I think it's a lovely holiday, and a chance to show the virtual sysadmins in your life that you care. Be sure to give your virtual sysadmin a call, and...

No, wait, that's not right at all. I'll come in again.

In the past, the folks at Oracle Technology Network have gone on the road, holding "Sysadmin Days" -- several hours of hands-on, proctored labs for Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, and Oracle VM administrators -- in various cities around the world. They've been very well-attended and well-received, but the problem is that there are always more cities one could hold these in than there are days in the year. And what about those of you on farms? Or in Antarctica, or in undersea habitats?

Thus: Virtual Sysadmin Days, harnessing the power of the Internet. OTN held their first Virtual Sysadmin Day earlier this year, and it was a hit. So, on July 15th, they're doing it again.

Now, what's exciting to me is that Pavel Anni and Glynn Foster spent some time thinking about how to make the Oracle Solaris track even better than before, and this time around, instead of approaching the day from a "feature" point of view, they designed the agenda as a task-oriented flow: what if you need to set up a secure, multi-level application?

That's what this day (OK, half day) is going to be all about. Your mission will be to deploy a web-based application and its supporting database, leveraging the intrinsic features of Oracle Solaris, in three steps:  storage and web; database and application; and, finally, resource monitoring and packaging. Just like the non-virtual days, the labs are proctored, so you'll have a chance to ask questions and get help as you go along.

Even if you participated in the earlier Virtual Sysadmin Day, you may find this to be worth attending, to approach existing or new skills from a different direction.

Like the previous virtual (and non-virtual) Sysadmin Days, this is free, but you do need to register. And just like last time, there's some prework for you to do ahead of the actual day, so register now and get ready.

March 14: Virtual Sysadmin Day for Asia/Pacific region

The folks over at Oracle Technology Network (OTN) have been holding a very popular series of "Sysadmin Days" -- road shows for Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux and Oracle VM, featuring a packed agenda of hands-on labs.  This was great news for people in certain cities, but what about the rest of the world?

Solved! Last month, they took the same material and put together a "Virtual Sysadmin Day", which by all accounts was a smashing success. Not only were the hands-on labs available for anyone to join in on from the comfort of the web, there were virtual proctors available to chat with during the event itself.

So far so good, but even on the intartubez, geography matters, what with timezones and whatnot. So on Thursday, March 14, the third Virtual Sysadmin Day will be held at an Asia/Pacific friendly start time: 9:30am (India) / 12noon (Singapore) / 3:00pm (Sydney).

(This is also excellent for, say, New York night owls who prefer to dig into such things at 11 PM.)

Like the previous Sysadmin Days, this is free, but you do need to register. One other thing: there's prework, so register now and make sure you're ready to go.

Register today for the next OTN Sys Admin Day - Thursday, Aug 23rd

Join Us at the OTN Sys Admin Day – Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux

Register today for the next OTN Sys Admin Day in the Broomfield Oracle Campus on Thursday, August 23rd.

Our previous OTN Sysadmin Day in Santa Clara had almost 100 attendees. The one in Denver will have similar presentations, but we're adding some content on virtualization. Which we hope to expand into a third track in the future. As usual, Pavel Anni opens our OTN Sysadmin Days with a talk about Oracle's dual OS strategy. He explains why Oracle offers two operating systems, and summarizes the main features of each one. Then we split off into two different groups to get our hands on each OS.

One group gets their hands on the ZFS filesystem, virtualization capabilities, and security controls of Oracle Solaris.

The other group gets their hands on the package management tools, services, and runs levels of Oracle Linux, plus its volume management tools and the Btrfs filesystem.

Both groups learn by doing, using the hands-on labs similar to those on OTN's Hands-On Labs page. Why attend an event in person when you could simply work the labs on your own? Two reasons:

  1. Since you are away from the obligations of the data center, you get to focus on working the labs without interruption.
  2. You get help from Oracle experts and other sysadmins who are working on the same labs as you.
The event is free. Here's the agenda:
Time Session
8:00 am System Shakedown
9:00 am Oracle's Dual OS Strategy

Oracle Solaris Track

Oracle Linux Track

10:00 am HOL: Oracle Solaris ZFS HOL: Package Management and Configuration
