Networking the Future

In Oracle Solaris 11 Express we introduced several key features to scale, virtualize and manage your networking resources. Our headline feature is network virtualization which allows you to create these virtual networking components:
  • VNICs - Virtual Network Interface Controllers (VNICs), the fundamental building block of network virtualization, are created and assigned IP addresses as communication end points
  • Virtual Switches - the capability for VNICs to communicate with each other as if they were connected through a physical switch
  • Etherstubs - a special type of data link that can be used instead of a physical NIC to create VNICs and the virtual switches that connect them
  • Flows -  Per link (virtual or physical) management to attain Quality of Service (QoS) goals by setting bandwidth limits for different types of traffic flowing through the datalink

These technologies offer a couple of key business benefits:
  • Drive costs out of your networking infrastructure with virtual implementations for NICs and switches
  • Obtain the best utilization from your physical NICs by carving up the NIC and assigning a virtual NIC to an application or zone
  • Improve your QoS capabilities to reliably deliver network bandwidth to your customers so they get just what they need and don't monopolize network resources
We've tightly integrated network virtualization with Oracle Solaris Zones to provide complete, tunable, manageable and independent networking engines for each zone on your system.

In addition to the new network virtualization capabilities in Solaris 11 Express we've added these networking features:
  • Enhanced the Solaris Infinband stack to improve Sockets Direct Protocol (SDP) allowing the transparent redirection of TCP/IP usage to SDP and the efficiencies that brings. We also now implement the RDSv3 protocol providing better performance and observability for Oracle RAC databases on both general purpose hardware and Exadata systems
  • Added the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) to provides high availability to our integrated L4/L3 load balancing and integrated router technologies
  • Introduced Network Auto-Magic (NWAM) to simplify and automate network configuration by allowing users to automatically discover and connect to networks
  • Improved visibility in to your networking configuration to view all IP traffic sent on real and virtual paths using common packet sniffing tools such as etherreal, snoop and wireshark. We also provide tools that give you statistics for data links including detailed per-VNIC usage of a physical NIC all the way down to per-hardware rings statistics. Other tools and commands provide detailed, real-time statistics for flows and configuration information for datalinks and flows
