OpenSocial Templates

OpenSocial Icon

As pointed out earlier in this blog, OpenSocial spec version 0.8.1 has been reviewed and is ready for implementation. So what's next? Already there has been some discussions on what should be there in OpenSocial spec version 0.9. One of the cool things is the proposal on templates. Checkout this link for more information. This is great news for us working on Project SocialSite since it makes development of our gadgets so easy :)

Project SocialSite opens up!

We are very pleased to announce that source code is now available for Project SocialSite (under a CDDL/GPL license) and the project is now operating as an open source project following the Glassfish governance policy. We're working in the open and welcome contributors of all stripes.

In case you haven't heard, Project SocialSite is a set of Widgets and Web Services that you can use to add Social Networking features to your existing web sites and applications. It includes a Java web application that manages a comprehensive Social Graph repository and exposes that data via an OpenSocial-based REST API. SocialSite also includes a set of Widgets that can be used to create an end-to-end UI for Social Networking, including the ability to run OpenSocial Gadgets within the pages of your existing sites.

Source code for all of this is available today and a binary 'snapshot' build, but we're not ready to make a formal release yet. In fact, the code is a bit rough and critical features, such as security, are not yet implemented. So please bear with us or better yet join us and help us work towards our goal of creating a great OpenSocial implementation and a great platform for Social Networking.

Here's a quick guide to the Project SocialSite bits that are ready today:

We'll have more to say next week, if not before.
