OpenSocial and Shindig Milestones

OpenSocial Icon

It's been a busy week for OpenSocial. On the standards front, Cassie has announced that the OpenSocial 0.8.1 specs have been reviewed and are ready for implementation.

And speaking of implementation, Shindig (the OpenSocial RI) is nearing a 1.0 release. Kevin got that discussion started with a thread on the shindig-dev alias. It sounds like September 30 is the initial candidate for a release target (though that's certainly not finalized yet).

Both developments bode well for SocialSite, as we leverage Shindig and always strive to support the latest OpenSocial specification.

Friendster's OpenSocial support goes live

According to Techcrunch and the OpenSocial project's list of Live OpenSocial Containers, there's a new OpenSocial container in town. Friendster's OpenSocial support is now live. Here's some analysis from Techcrunch:

Jason Kincaid, Techcrunch: While Friendster may not be nearly as big a player as MySpace or Facebook in the United States, it still has a vast audience in Asia. Because of the minimal amount of overlap seen between Asian and American markets (Facebook and MySpace have had difficulty expanding in some portions of Asia), the site offers developers a large number of potential new users. Its addition to the OpenSocial platform puts increasing pressure on Facebook to adopt some kind of open application standard, as developers will dislike having to reprogram their applications just to run on Facebook’s closed platform.

Update: Prakash Dodeja, Director of Engineering at Friendster posted some more details on the Google OpenSocial blog.
