Diagnose SOA Suite 11g Issues Using RDA (Remote Diagnostic Agent)

Why use RDA for SOA?

Starting in RDA release 4.26 we have added several new collections for the SOA module including:
  • Composite Configuration from MDS
  • SOA Runtime MBeans
  • SOA Repository Summaries
  • These are in addition to the included WebLogic Server collections which provide a tremendous amount of configuration and runtime information

Getting Started with RDA for SOA Suite 11g

There are several knowledge base documents available intended to help you to get started with RDA. These documents give background information about RDA, how to download and install it, how to run it to get a collection and also how to analyze the diagnostic data collected. Here is the list of documents available:

RDA Module used for SOA Suite 11g

RDA consists of different modules specialized in their tasks. There are modules collecting diagnostic data for different products. For SOA Suite 11g use the SOA module. The SOA module also optionally collects WebLogic Server information. The WebLogic Server module is called WREQ and is automatically included if running the SOA module.

RDA is installed in a rda subdirectory of the SOA Oracle Home directory. If you download a newer version of RDA, replace the existing directory with the new version. The SOA module collects information about different components of a SOA installation like oracle_common, WebLogic Server, SOA Oracle Home and the SOA Infrastructure database, also called repository or dehydration store. If the servers are up and running during the RDA collection, RDA will connect to those servers and collect runtime data as well. Additionally, it will connect to the SOA infrastructure database and collect data from there as well. The following picture illustrates this:

Running RDA to Collect Diagnostic Data

RDA has two phases, setup and run. The setup phase only needs to be done one time. During setup, RDA will ask several questions related to the module selected. It will store the answers in setup.cfg file. After setup is done, subsequent runs will use the information in setup.cfg. As RDA never stores any passwords, it will ask for passwords for the WebLogic Server admin user as well as for the SOAINFRA schema user during every run. Additional modules can be added to the setup.cfg file by running additional setup runs.

KM note 1352181.1 describes all questions asked for the SOA module. Here are some sample screen shots from a RDA SOA collection:

After RDA collection is finished, a html start page is available in order to load the RDA collection into a browser and analyze the data from there. In the example prefix SOA was used for the collection, so the start page will be SOA__start.htm in the output directory. Additionally, a zip file is available in the output directory which can be uploaded to a Service Request in order to provide the collected data.

Some Highlights in a SOA collection

RDA collects a comprehensive set of analysis data for SOA Suite 11g. Some of the highlights are:

1.  Configuration Information

  • SOA Configuration

  • WebLogic Configuration

2.  Runtime Information

  • SOA MBean Information

  • WLS MBean Information

3.  SOA Infrastructure Database Information

  • Schema MetaData

  • SOA Infrastructure Database Table and Tablespace Info
