SOA Governance at EDP: A Global Energy Company

Energias de Portugal (EDP) ranks among Europe's major electricity and natural gas operators in the generation, distribution and trading industries. It's one of the largest players wind energy companies in the world, with more than tem million customers and twelve-thousand workers. In this session hear how an SOA Governance initiative is helping EDP to streamline integrations between systems, establishing a model that closes the gap between business and IT, reducing time-to-market and increasing IT asset reusability.

Information systems play a central role in supporting the business challenges energy companies are facing, as new businesses are developed, as the energy grid and the relationship with customers is changing at a faster pace. EDP operates in a sector where those challenges are particularly acute and where the appropriate SOA approach is of paramount importance. In this presentation we will talk about the challenges of the SOA Governance Program's definition and implementation, and how the initial plan and subsequent global SOA Governance Framework evolved through EDP's projects.

September 25, 2012 - 15:30

Manuel Rosa, began his career participating in Enterprise Architecture projects in Portugal, Brazil and Luxembourg, mainly focusing on Application and Business Architectures. In the last few years, he coordinated the development of the SOA Governance Programs and has also been responsible for various SOA Governance projects, in main Portuguese enterprises in the Telecom and Utilities' industries. He is currently SOA Governance practice leader as the SOA at Link Consulting.

He is also currently teaching assistant on the subjects of Enterprise Architecture I and II, for the POSI postgraduate degree provided by Intituto Superior Técnico, INESC and INOV in a one year program.

The Successful Execution of the SOA and BPM Vision Using a Business Capability Framework: Concepts and Examples

Speaker: Clemens Utschig-Utschig, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & CoKG and Manas Deb, Oracle

At a basic level, SOA advocates software development using self-sustaining packages of IT assets, aka "services". Each of these services typically represents a unit of business functionality. Similarly, Business Process Management (BPM) focuses on the comprehensive discipline of creating, managing and improving "business processes" which are articulations of (business) activities that help a business function.

A business process often needs services for its execution; a service can sometime include one or more business processes. Thus, relevance of SOA and BPM to the success of a business is immediate and obvious. In fact, over the last decade, a great amount of attention and effort have been dedicated by businesses and technologists to derive substantial benefit from SOA + BPM vision. However, the yield has been quite uneven across companies attempting this combined adoption. Some are enjoying superior competitive advantages, while others have only garnered modest ROIs.

In this fast-paced presentation, author Clemens Utschig-Utschig and Manas Deb explain how ne of the key reasons for low returns from combined SOA and BPM adoption has been the lack of focus on "business capabilities". Strategies are conceived in order to achieve the goals and objectives of a business; for successful execution of a strategy a set of accurate and well-defined business capabilities is necessary. Using conceptual discussions and examples from the industry, this presentation will explain how business capabilities are related to business strategy execution, and in turn how SOA and BPM adoption can build upon and improve such business capabilities.

Clemens Utschig-Utschig works for Boehringer-Ingelheim′s Global Business Services (GBS) as Chief Architect, helping to establish GBS′ next gen′ business architecture based on service orientation. Before joining BI he worked at the Oracle Headquarters in the United States as platform architect, working with the Fusion Applications development as advisor and supported customers all around the world on their journey towards implementing enterprise-wide SOA. During his platform engineering years, Clemens was responsible for cross product integration, strategic standards as well as a member to the Oracle′s SOA platform steering committee, and served on the OASIS TC for Service Component Architecture (SCA).

In 2006 Clemens co-founded the "Masons-of-SOA", an inter-company network founded by architects of Oracle Germany, Opitz, SOPERA (Eclipse Project Swordfish founders) and EDS, with the mission of spreading knowledge, fostering discussion and supporting SOA programs across companies and borders. After 14 articles on advanced SOA topics in the German Java Magazin, a three patterns in Thomas Erl′s SOA Design Patterns catalogue, they are currently working on "Next Generation SOA" - slated to release as part of the Service Oriented Computing Series of Prentice Hall for late 2010. Clemens is also a co-author of the SOA Manifesto.

Dr. Manas Deb is a Senior Director in the Fusion Middleware/SOA+BPM+Governance Suites Group at Oracle HQ. He currently leads strategic engagement initiatives for Oracle's service-oriented integration and BPM solutions worldwide. He is also responsible for Oracle's SOA methodology initiatives. Manas has worked in the software industry for over 20 years, most of which was spent in software product management/marketing and on architecting and leading a wide variety of enterprise-level application development and business integrations projects in a wide variety of industries. He attended post-graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He has a PhD in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, as well as an MBA. Click Here to View Speaker Profile

Big Data with CEP and SOA - September 25, 2012 - 14:15

Speaker: Markus Zirn, Oracle

and Baz Kuthi, Avocent

The "Big Data" trend is driving new kinds of IT projects that process machine-generated data. Such projects store and mine using Hadoop/ Map Reduce, but they also analyze streaming data via event-driven patterns, which can be called "Fast Data" complementary to "Big Data". This session highlights how "Big Data" and "Fast Data" design patterns can be combined with SOA design principles into modern, event-driven architectures. We will describe specific architectures that combines CEP, Distributed Caching, Event-driven Network, SOA Composites, Application Development Framework, as well as Hadoop. Architecture patterns include pre-processing and filtering event streams as close as possible to the event source, in memory master data for event pattern matching, event-driven user interfaces as well as distributed event processing. Focus is on how "Fast Data" requirements are elegantly integrated into a traditional SOA architecture.

Markus Zirn is Vice President of Product Management covering Oracle SOA Suite, SOA Governance, Application Integration Architecture, BPM, BPM Solutions, Complex Event Processing and UPK, an end user learning solution. He is the author of “The BPEL Cookbook” (rated best book on Services Oriented Architecture in 2007) as well as “Fusion Middleware Patterns”.

Previously, he was a management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton’s High Tech practice in Duesseldorf as well as San Francisco and Vice President of Product Marketing at QUIQ. Mr. Zirn holds a Masters of Electrical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe and is an alumnus of the Tripartite program, a joint European degree from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, the University of Southampton, UK, and ESIEE, France.

Swarm Computing – Next Generation Clouds and the Role of SOA – my presentation from the SOA & Cloud Symposium

If you had not to chance to attend the SOA & Cloud Symposium you can now watch the key presentations at InfoQ

image

My presentation at the SOA & Cloud Symposium website and as a video at the InfoQ website. Joe McKendrick with a nice summery and feedback. If you like to present at future events check out our SOA call for papers wiki

Presentation abstract

We either use public clouds, for example Amazon EC2, most times for training or development purposes. These environments are only used for a limited time frame. The second cloud models are private clouds, used by corporations in their own datacenters to increase the utilization of their servers across multiple applications.

Today, we use either private or public clouds for certain use cases. To enable a wider adoption of business solutions, hybrid clouds will be the future model. Key will be integration, as well on the data level, the service level and the process level. Processes might start in a private cloud continue in a public cloud and will be completed in a private cloud.

For example, a rental car company (RYLC) starts a promotion for convertibles on their SaaS solution, in their legacy system new promotion and price is added to the financial system. A customer rents the promotional convertible in the public cloud online store. The order is processes and billed from the private cloud system. In this case SOA will be the key enabler for:

-SOA Integration: Integration on all levels will be key, to integrate data, services and processes between legacy systems, private cloud systems and public cloud systems to hybrid systems.
-BPMN process change: Processes based on BPMN 2.0 across hybrid clouds can be adopted by the business owner to respond on flexible business requirements.
-Middleware and SOA Governance enable atomic, loosely coupled participants.

With the RYLC example we will demonstrate many examples in a show case using various technologies including open source. Lastly we will discuss, swarm computing, a future cloud solutions. Today cloud systems are often limited to a small number of use cases e.g. test system or training systems. For a wider business adoption more intelligent systems are required. Meta data and ontology’s will be the enabler for intelligent systems which interconnect with each other.
