SOA Blueprint: A Toolbox for Architects – article at OTN and Service Technology Magazine

image32this article introduces the foundations that need to be established in order to implement functional SOA processes. Rather than presenting specific tools, we will define a broadly applicable SOA blueprint whose individual modules can be topped up with commercial products or increasingly available open source offerings.

A Company Blueprint

Upon examination of Figure 1, the vision of adaptive enterprise computing is illustrated as a meta-blueprint for the overall company with three differentiated levels:

  • Infrastructure Level - This level is formed by databases, storage systems, application servers, and all other IT resources that are required to run IT systems.
  • Application System Level - This level houses entire applications, both individual applications and standard software, as well as services relating to SOA, workflow and BPM systems.
  • Process Management Level - Functional requirements are manifested in the process design and then implemented at the lower levels.

Figure 1An advanced service-oriented architecture is the most effective option for implementing the functional requirements at the application-system level. The more superior the mapping of existing business services to the functional steps in process models is, the more the business-IT gap shrinks.

Various back-coupling loops represent the actual added value of this meta-blueprint, meaning consistent usage of services and technical processes enables the measuring of KPIs. This in turn facilitates process control and ultimately the optimization of processes. The more progress a company makes in implementing their SOA, the greater and faster are the effects to be achieved for adaptive
enterprise computing. ... read the full article here

Industrial SOA article at OTN and Service Technology Magazine

image3SOA and service-orientation have laid the foundation for a variety of emergent service technology innovations, while the original building blocks of SOA and service-orientation continue to evolve by embracing fundamental service technologies, concepts and practices. These new technology innovations do not replace service-orientation; they use it as their basis.

Service-orientation continues to evolve towards a factory approach, towards industrializing integrated platforms, such as BI, master data management (MDM), mobile front-ends, BPM, adaptive processes, Big Data and Cloud Computing – all of which add architectural layers upon SOA-based infrastructure. All of these technologies can interface via standardized data and functions, published as service contracts, in order to avoid redundancy – that's service-orientation. Let's take a closer look. The amount of data, which companies produce and store tends to grow on an on-going basis. This includes structured data (for example, from ERP systems or data warehouses), as well as unstructured data (for example, from e-mails). With the rise of social media services like twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and the emphasis on Customer Experience Management, the amount of data and data sources has increased dramatically. To integrate all of these data sources through an SOA-approach is essential. The models, principles and patterns behind SOA and service-orientation can be applied to formalize interoperability between... read the full article here

Steve Millidge, C2B2 Consulting

Steve is the director and founder of C2B2 Consulting - a specialist Java consultancy focusing exclusively on achieving non-functional requirements. Steve has used Java extensively since pre1.0 and has been a field based professional service consultant for over 15 years. Through C2B2 he now focuses on the configuration of JEE and SOA infrastructure for maximum Scalability, Performance, Availability, Recoverability, Manageability and Security. Having worked for and on behalf of Oracle, BEA and Red Hat professional services he has extensive experience of deploying large scale production Java systems. Steve is an expert group member of JSR107 (Java Caching), JSR286 (Portlets) and JSR347 (Data Grids). Steve has spoken at a number of events including Java One, JBoss User Group, JBoss World, UK Oracle User Group Conference, UK Coherence SIG, The Server Side Symposium, Community One and regularly presents technical workshops on Data Grids and Coherence.

Cloud-based Enterprise Architecture

We know service-oriented architectures can deliver huge agility benefits for developing new functionality through repeated service reuse. However, if our shared services become highly used, they may be subjected to massively increased loads from runtime events that we, as service owners, cannot predict. With the significant return on investment gained with the deployment of public and private clouds, virtualization technology is now making it possible to combine SOA infrastructures with monitoring and APM tools to elastically scale out service deployments in response to real-time load increases.

This session will take a technical deep dive into a service-oriented architecture engineered specifically for elasticity. The following questions will be explored:

  • How can I monitor the load on my Services?
  • How can I fire up additional compute capacity as a service becomes loaded?
  • How do I architect my SOA deployment to utilise the power and flexibility of a private or public cloud?
  • How do I deploy UDDI to ensure clients can fully utilise new capacity?
  • How can I see what is happening on my ESB infrastructure?
This talk is aimed at for architects and developers who have moved beyond "playing" with SOA in the cloud, and are looking to deploy SOA into a cloud-based production environment.

SOA Governance at EDP: A Global Energy Company

Energias de Portugal (EDP) ranks among Europe's major electricity and natural gas operators in the generation, distribution and trading industries. It's one of the largest players wind energy companies in the world, with more than tem million customers and twelve-thousand workers. In this session hear how an SOA Governance initiative is helping EDP to streamline integrations between systems, establishing a model that closes the gap between business and IT, reducing time-to-market and increasing IT asset reusability.

Information systems play a central role in supporting the business challenges energy companies are facing, as new businesses are developed, as the energy grid and the relationship with customers is changing at a faster pace. EDP operates in a sector where those challenges are particularly acute and where the appropriate SOA approach is of paramount importance. In this presentation we will talk about the challenges of the SOA Governance Program's definition and implementation, and how the initial plan and subsequent global SOA Governance Framework evolved through EDP's projects.

September 25, 2012 - 15:30

Manuel Rosa, began his career participating in Enterprise Architecture projects in Portugal, Brazil and Luxembourg, mainly focusing on Application and Business Architectures. In the last few years, he coordinated the development of the SOA Governance Programs and has also been responsible for various SOA Governance projects, in main Portuguese enterprises in the Telecom and Utilities' industries. He is currently SOA Governance practice leader as the SOA at Link Consulting.

He is also currently teaching assistant on the subjects of Enterprise Architecture I and II, for the POSI postgraduate degree provided by Intituto Superior Técnico, INESC and INOV in a one year program.
