SOA Governance Through Enterprise Architecture by Manuel Rosa and André de Oliveira Sampaio

rosa-sampaio-soa-gov-fig09Achieving a global enterprise architecture vision that provides mechanisms and tools to enrich the information required for application, process, and project portfolio management Downloads Oracle Enterprise Repository.

Abstract

The ownership cost of technology assets can, and usually does, become significant. The need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for most organizations.

In Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), it is vital to manage the service, the main component of this architectural strategy, and its components. The service's reuse benefits can easily be diminished without correct analysis of its dependencies and impacts.

Using Oracle Enterprise Repository as the central point of SOA artifacts' cataloguing makes it possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different SOA assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play.

Although SOA governance and its tools are mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, their value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. A number of problems jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives, primarily understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution: SOA governance tools are usually inadequate for anyone outside of the technical domain (business analysts, project managers, or even some enterprise architects), and are especially harsh at the CxO level.

A governance strategy is fundamental for SOA and cannot be complete without a global enterprise architecture vision that provides mechanisms and tools to enrich the information required for application, process, and project portfolio management.

By creating a formal, common, representational model, a language (graphic and textual), and standard viewpoints, and by extending the basic capabilities of a SOA governance tool, we can leverage the information for a greater scope and number of analysis possibilities (e.g., time-based, dependency).

To tackle those challenges, Li

nk Consulting has brought Oracle Enterprise Repository's main functionalities and its own Enterprise Architecture Management System (EAMS) together in a full SOA governance + enterprise architecture solution. The Enterprise Architecture Management System - Oracle Enterprise Edition combines the architecture management solution with Oracle Enterprise Repository to deliver a product specialized for SOA governance. It gathers the best of two worlds (SOA and EA) in a solution that enables SOA governance projects, initiatives and programs, and provides an easier mechanism for exchanging information with the business, other operational areas and project management.

In this article, we describe how an organization can leverage the best EA and SOA governance practices and, with the help of adequate exploration and communication tools (like Oracle Enterprise Repository and EAMS), achieve and maintain the level of quality and visibility that is required for SOA and SOA governance initiatives. Promoting Organizational Visibility for SOA and SOA Governance Initiatives – Part I by Manuel Rosa and André Sampaio

imgThe costs of technology assets can become significant and the need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for many organizations. Through the implementation of various mechanisms, it is possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play.

Although SOA governance is mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, its value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. There are a number of problems that jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives: Understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution – SOA governance tools are too technical and isolated from other systems. They are inadequate for anyone outside of the domain (Business Analyst, Project Managers, or even some Enterprise Architects), and are especially harsh at the CxO level.

Lack of information exchange with the business, other operational areas and project management – It is not only a matter of lack of dialog but also the question of using a common vocabulary (textual or graphic) that is adequate for all the stakeholders. We need to generate information that can be useful for a wider scope of stakeholders like Business and enterprise architectures. In this article we describe how an organization can leverage from the existing best practices, and with the help of adequate exploration and communication tools, achieve and maintain the level of quality and visibility that is required for SOA and SOA governance initiatives.

Introduction
Understanding and implementing effective SOA governance has become a corporate imperative in order to ensure coherence and the attainment of the basic objectives of SOA initiatives:

  • develop the correct services
  • control costs and risks bound to the development process
  • reduce time-to-market

The latest version of Oracle BPM 11g PS6 introduces a set of new features that are of extreme value for the BPM lifecycle – José Afonso Pires, Link Consulting

imageOne of the challenges with most BPM project is in the way the business users and the analysts are involved in the projects. How is the process modeled, how are the interfaces defined and how is it that the analyst can preview the end result during the early analysis phase. With Oracle BPM the analyst can do all this within the Process Composer, a web based tool that is specifically designed for analysts, but whose artifacts are 100% shared with the development team.

On top of the BPMN 2.0 support for process modeling, the Composer now supports the definition of user interfaces using web forms. The analyst can define the information that should be displayed on each form and how it is organized within the web page. But there is more to it. It is also possible to play the process within composer. The analyst can start the process, fill in the information on each web form, and see how the process will move forward. This is a huge benefit for almost all BPM projects, as it will allow analyst to share with business users a functional prototype of the final solution. It will also help establishing the correct expectation earlier on, when a project is being planned. The stakeholders can now better understand what will be the result of the project.

These new features will also allow faster deployment of BPM projects. Simpler processes can be delivered much faster based on web forms, and new versions can be delivered afterwards enhancing the process design and the interfaces based on feedback from users, allowing an agile like approach to BPM projects. Delivering SOA Governance with EAMS and Oracle Enterprise Repository by Link Consulting Team

In the last 12 years Link Consulting has been making its presence in specific areas such as Governance and Architecture, both in terms of practices and methodologies, products, know-how and technological expertise. The Enterprise Architecture Management System - Oracle Enterprise Edition (EAMS - OER Edition) is the result of this experience and combines the architecture management solution with OER in order to deliver a product specialized for SOA Governance that gathers the better of two worlds in solution that enables SOA Governance projects, initiatives and programs.

Enterprise Architecture Management System

Enterprise Architecture Management System (EAMS), is an automation based solution that enables the efficient management of Enterprise Architectures. The solution uses configured enterprise repositories and takes advantages of its features to provide automation capabilities to the users. EAMS provides capabilities to create/customize/analyze repository data, architectural blueprints, reports and analytic charts.

Oracle Enterprise Repository

Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) is one of the major and central elements of the Oracle SOA Governance solution. Oracle Enterprise Repository provides the tools to manage and govern the metadata for any type of software asset, from business processes and services to patterns, frameworks, applications, components, and models. OER maps the relationships and inter-dependencies that connect those assets to improve impact analysis, promote and optimize their reuse, and measure their impact on the bottom line. It provides the visibility, feedback, controls, and analytics to keep your SOA on track to deliver business value. The intense focus on automation helps to overcome barriers to SOA adoption and streamline governance throughout the lifecycle.

Core capabilities of the OER include:

  • Asset Management

  • Asset Lifecycle Management

  • Usage Tracking

  • Service Discovery

  • Version Management

  • Dependency Analysis

  • Portfolio Management

EAMS - OER Edition

The solution takes the advantages and features from both products and combines them in a symbiotic tool that enhances the quality of SOA Governance Initiatives and Programs.

EAMS is able to produce a vast number of outputs by combining its analytical engine, SOA-specific configurations and the assets in OER and other related tools, catalogs and repositories. The configurations encompass not only the extendable parametrization of the metadata but also fully configurable blueprints, PowerPoint reports, charts and queries.

The SOA blueprints

The solution comes with a set of predefined architectural representations that help the organization better perceive their SOA landscape. More blueprints can be easily created in order to accommodate the organizations needs in terms of detail, audience and metadata.
