Great New Book for Oracle ADF Web App Development Teams

I had a chance to read Sten Vesterli's  Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development - Made Simple on some recent time off and thought it was excellent. I posted a short review on about what I most liked about it. Well worth a read.

Easily Divvy Up the Space on One or More Monitors

I work with multiple monitors and inevitably have many, many windows open. I've found a small utility called Divvy from Mizage to be super-useful to me. Using hot keys I can easily tile windows in any pattern across three monitors in a snap. It even has some more advanced features I haven't had time to try yet that allow you to save frequently-used window layout combinations and assign hotkeys to them. Recommended.

Use WizKey to Easily Type Accented Characters in Any App

I frequently type emails and documents in both english and italian, however having grown up in the US and having learned to touch-type in the US, I am sworn to a US keyboard layout for maximum typing speed. Since the Google Chrome team doesn't seem interested to fix their lack of support for functionality like the Firefox ZombieKeys extension, and no existing Chrome extension worked well for me, I decided to look for alternatives. The one I ended up trying, liking, and buying for a reasonably low price is Antibody Software's WizKey. The additional benefit of using WizKey is that the shortcuts for typing international characters work in any application, even over VNC. Recommended.

New Call Hierarchy Tree in JDeveloper 11.1.2

In the new JDeveloper 11.1.2 release, you can right-click on any method in the code editor and choose Call Hierarchy... This opens a new dockable window where you can see the method you selected and all the methods that call it. Using a toggle button in that window, you can switch to showing a list of all the methods that the selected method calls. I've found this feature quite useful when exploring code written by other developers. Try it out!

Must Try Oracle ADF Features in New 11.1.2 Release

There are many, many new features in the JDeveloper / ADF 11.1.2 major release that is available on OTN starting today, and especially a lot of interesting features in the ADF Business Components area.

A few of these deserve special attention because they were designed to directly address recurring issues we've heard from a lot of customers:

  • "Help us improve the speed of the test/debug/fix cycle! If we change any ADF metadata we have to re-run the app to see the changes!"
    • 11.1.2 has hot-deploy support that allows you to recompile your model project then just refresh the page to see the changes. No more need to redeploy the app.
  • "Help us figure out how components are related!"
    • 11.1.2 has a new "Diagram" tab on the component editors that produces an on-the-fly UML diagram showing how the current component relates to others and allows you to quickly navigate to related components with a click. Here's an example of the "Diagram" tab on a "BugReport" entity object, showing all the associated entities. Each blue hyperlink navigates you to a related object:
  • "Help us see where all of our Groovy expressions are!"
    • 11.1.2 has a unified "Business Rules" tree view showing all groovy expressions.
We hope you like the new release!
