Opening an Apple

Sorry...not that Apple. And not that Open either...

My sister-in-law Dami has repeatedly (and with good humor) demonstrated what she calls "opening an apple," a feat which amazes me. Briefly, she can tear an apple into two pieces with her bare hands, leaving no marks on the apple at all. Here is a not-very-good-photo of her handiwork:

[split apple]

I can't do this no matter how hard I try. Her husband the Marine can't do it either. She claims this is a common thing in Korea where she grew up. I think it may be time to call David Letterman. :-)

Comments:

Ok, Josh can you maybe describe how she does this? Quite fasinating, though I can imagine your brother the Marine would make apple sauce out of it.

I would describe it this way:

Hold the apple stem up with your left hand by gripping it over the top with your thumb and underneath with your index finger. The thumb and index finger make a 'C' that grips the apple along its vertical midline.

Now put the palm of your right hand on top of the apple, next to your thumb. Brace the apple on your thigh and...push?...twist? I'm not sure...
