ADF Faces Layouts Demo - A Hidden Treasure

Shay Shmeltzer
Director of Product Management - Oracle

Layouting pages with ADF Faces containers is sometimes not as simple as we would have liked it to be - especially for people who are just getting started. There are some tricks that can help you achieve the layout that you are looking for.

One great way to learn some of those tricks is to look at the new

"Visual Design" section of the ADF Faces Hosted demo.

For example look at the Form Layout part - and you'll see nicely aligned forms that contain various UI layout scenarios. Want to learn how this has been achieved? - just click the "page source" link at the top right - and you can see how that layout has been done.

Don't forget that you can also download the full demo source here.

One other good resource I came across today is the "Designing well known websites with ADF Rich Faces" presentation from Maiko Rocha and George Magessy - it's missing the demo part - but you can still learn a lot from the slides.

Mohamed , Unfortunately the service I use for hosting my videos doesn't have a download option built in.

    Hi Shay,
One layout scenario I have not seen covered (or one that I have missed) is the ability to force the parent container to vertically expand (without a scrollbar) based on the size of the children. For example, I am developing a corporate externally facing website in ADF and we have a page whose left side navigation content (filtering options, stacked vertically) is dynamic and can increase in height based on the dynamic content loaded in the center facet. As it stands, we have been unable to determine how to force the height of the container to expand based on the dynamic left side nav content - currently, it disappears under the page footer.

Hi MattC, I'm not sure I understand your scenario - it might be better if you can post it with images on the JDeveloper discussion forum.

Hi Shay, just read your blog and it's good, but regarding vertically aligned layout. I think it only worked in Firefox but in IE, it does not layout correctly. Still my problem for the past 2 weeks.. :(

Here I've described a simple method to achieve complex layouts.
