Solaris on the iMac

Solaris Nevada build 36 running on an iMac

Solaris on iMac

We now have Solaris Nevada build 36 installed and running on a bootcamp equipped iMac.

The most significant hurdles were conquered when Juergen Keil enabled both multiboot and GRUB to work in a i8042 free system. That work is covered by 6412224 and 6412226.

The next hurdle is that the Solaris fdisk doesn't interact all that well with the bootcamp prepared disk. This is 6413235. The reason this becomes a hurdle is that install re-writes the fdisk table even when we can simply use the existing one. That is 6413240.

This is all using the bootcamp bits which make the Macs look like just another (BIOS bugs and all) x86 system. Bringing Solaris up in native (EFI) mode is still the real challenge.

Awesome. :)

I want to buy an intel mac, when the power mac replacement comes out. I wonder if the fan drivers will work, i wouldn't want to cook my mac.

Meh. Call me again when you can boot Kickstart 4.0 on an ICBM. It all looks nice, but who is going to support all this wonderful technical jiggery pokery?

Based on a brief look at the ACPI tables for this machine, there does not appear to be an ACPI thermal zone. This means the fan is (as it should be) under automatic control of the platform and no fan driver is required.

Hi, Could you try our Open Sound System drivers ( to see if they work on Solaris 10 on the MacBook Pro?. We know that Apple's using the Intel High Definition Audio chip (Azalia) and we currently have drivers for the Azalia chip but would be interested in seeing if they work on Apple's hardware. best regards Dev Mazumdar 4Front Technologies

great go on, but better work together with Apple on a common kernel in OS X 10.5 or at least 11.0 ;-)

I would love to be able to use Solaris to run my Intel Mac. I like the Intel Mac hardware better than the Sun Intel hardware because the CPUs use so much less energy. I dream of the day that I can order Solaris 10 from Sun and do a simple install onto my Intel Mac!

If you install refit from, the re-writing of the MBR shouldn't be a problem, as it can put it back into sync at boot.
