Mobility in Manufacturing: Points for Consideration

Clearly, we are living in a mobile world. At the 2015 Oracle Value Chain Summit last week, if you looked in any session room or in the hallways, you could see people on their mobile devices doing things like checking email, tweeting, taking pictures and arranging their schedules. During the sessions, there were some fascinating presentations and demos across all Value Chain solution areas on using mobile technology to perform critical business tasks such as managing and maintaining remote assets, reporting equipment issues and providing status reports on inventory.

During one of the Manufacturing solution area keynotes, Mobility in Manufacturing, LNS Research President and Principal Analyst Matthew Littlefield presented on industry trends. Life Changing Analytics: Leveraging Data to Optimize Manufacturing Operations

A new report, commissioned by Wipro and published by the Economist Intelligence Unit titled "Manufacturing and the Data Conundrum: Too Much? Too Little? Or Just Right" examines how manufacturers are using integrated data collection and analysis to improve production throughput, reduce costs and improve quality. The research is based on a survey of 50 C-Suite executives from manufacturers in North America and Western Europe. The report revealed that while most manufacturing firms have greatly increased the volume of data they collect from the shop floor over the past two years, many are struggling to get the most out of it. Key SCM Initiatives Over Next Twelve Months Include Visibility, BI and Integrated Business Planning

Gartner, in conjunction with Supply Chain Digest, recently published their seventh annual supply chain study, which is based on survey input from almost 500 SC Digest readers. One of the more interesting charts in the report was named Supply Chain Digest's Supply Chain Graphic of the Week (posted below). This chart identifies the top key supply chain initiatives as:

1. Visibility
2. Enhanced business intelligence
3. Integrated business planning
