Firefox add-on - YouTube Viewer

Over the holidays I have been hacking Firefox, XULRunner, JavaScript and so on...it has been a lot of fun.

Here is a no-nosense YouTube Viewer add-on for Firefox that came out of that:

YouTube Viewer

If you want to try it, simply download this add-on, install it and launch it using Tools:YouTube Viewer... menu item. The operation is pretty simple, just type the search terms in the Search for: (Alt+f) text field and press Search (Alt+S)button. The list of matching videos will be populated in the listbox on the left. Select a video and type ENTER or double click on it. The video is loaded in the Video panel. The Description text box shows the video title and detailed description.

Watch this space for a tutorial on how I developed this module and which tools and add-ons I used to develop and  debug this add-on.

DISCLAIMER: This add-on is experimental. So no guarantees. Use the add-on at your own risk.

Comments:

Cool tool and Happy New Year! Any chance you'll release the source for this? I've never built an add-on but always had a curiosity so I'd be interested in seeing how you went about the code for this. It would be nice to add preferences to set the size of the video player or maximum amount of results, etc. at some point.

Thanks Wayne. I will improve the tool in future but for now I wanted to keep it simple. You can change the size of video by resizing the window.

I will write a tutorial on this as I find time. The Mozilla.com (developer section) web site has some good info on add-on development. BTW the current maximum for search results is 50, however repeated search will find the next 50 if the search term is not changed.

BTW you can run the standalone YouTube Viewer with the following command (on Ubuntu):

> /usr/bin/firefox -chrome chrome://youtubeviewer/content/youtubeviewer.xul

Hey, I saw you are also busy with the 'Embedded Browser' of netbeans (wiki.netbeans.org).

Have you seen the native webbrowser in http://djproject.sourceforge.net/ns/.
It works quite well. Maybe something to look into!

Thanks Kees. I will have a look.

I have fixed the bug whereby only the first search worked. Now the subsequent searches should work.
