NetBeans demo @ J1

The NetBeans demo Rico presented at our J1 session showed how tooling can be used in conjunction with the RESTful API in R2 of SWDP to turn a database into a Web service. Chris Webster has more info here, including a screen-cast.

There is no substitute for people hammering away at your API to get good feedback. And that is what we got with the NetBeans guys using our API (which incidentally is great for an API produced by the 311 expert group as all the experience feeds into this as well).

Notice in the screen-cast the ability to convert entity relationships into URIs such that an XML serialization of an entity contains embedded links to related entities.

Marc and I were pleasantly surprised to learn that Ayub (another NetBeans guy) wrote some JavaScript to dynamically create a test client from the WADL that is automatically generated from the annotated Java classes that make up the RESTful Web service (Marc and Ayub described more about this in a BOF on WADL @ J1). I really like it when serendipity throws up things like this. It shows the potential ease of which WADL can be consumed and can used to help the developer quickly test their service.
