Leaving Oracle | Long Live Sun!

Last week I tendered my resignation at Oracle.

Friday next week (8/10) will be my last day.

It's been an interesting 17 years, and some of best years were when we were Sun.

I'm leaving to pursue new and exciting opportunities as an independent tech writing and web design contractor.

Carry on.

It Was 50 Years Ago This Month...

IBM 1401

I just realized that it was 50 years ago this month that I wrote my first computer program.

It was for the IBM 1401 in Autocoder.  I was 18  (July 1962  do the math). Ouch!

IBM 1401 I took a class during the summer after my sophomore year in college. My regular summer job fell thru and my Dad knew someone, etc. I took the class on a lark, but it did interrupt my plan to read all of Aldous Huxley's novels on the beach. I guess the rest is history. I started my junior year with a part-time job in the college computer center (IBM 650) writing FORTRAN. In '65 I had my first full-time job as a programmer at the NYU computer center in Greenwich Village. You never know where a lark will lead, I guess.
