Why NetBeans?

Guest Author

"Why NetBeans?" is the name of my newest flash presentation, which covers 10 reasons why I think NetBeans is a great IDE. The presentation is divided into two parts and in the first part I talk about following topics:

1. Matisse GUI Builder

2. Ant-based projects

3. NetBeans Profiler

4. NetBeans Platform

5. Localization

So if you are a member of NetBeans community you will probably know these features well (all 4 demos are about features included in NetBeans 5.0). I think this preso is really useful for newcomers to NetBeans - but perhaps you can learn a trick or two from the demos, too, even though you know NetBeans well.

The second part of the presentation is in the works and will cover following topics:

6. Java EE 5

7. Mobility Pack

8. SOA Tools

9. Visual Web Pack

10. Open Source Community

So except for number 10 these topics are 5.5-related and I'll talk about the new cool features... stay tuned for part 2. For now, you can play part 1:

I am also preparing an overview of NetBeans 5.5 features which will be published short after the release at Javalobby.

The demo looks great, I just have some propositions:

    1) when demonstrating GUI editor, it would be great to see some action handler - you press a button and something is changed in window.

    2) NetBeans Platform - you have added the custom window, but this window does nothing... Maybe you could demonstrate how this window communicate with some other part(s) of NetBeans?

Yes ... this would be useful but it takes time (I cover a lot of features in the preso). I cover these topics in some of the other demos I published on netbeans.org (e.g. this one). The "Why NetBeans?" is rather for the overview of the cool stuff for newcomers... Thanks for your feedback!

Btw Geertjan had this great idea that we could do a flash demo with NetBeans Visual library - use the APIs to actually build some nice application in the demo. So stay tuned for that ... it's in my todolist (which is not short ;)

Very nice presentation! I will have to try out the profiling tools...they're as good as commercial tools we currently use.

The flash demo is great, Roman. It will be a valuable resource for beginners. I will start propaganda in my company to migrate Netbeans as soon as possible :)

Cool ;) This is just part 1... it will take a while to prepare part 2, but then the story will be complete.

At 3:05 of the Matisse demo there is some corruption as the preview is resized. I get that quite a bit on my laptop, is there a fix?
Matisse should definitely be reason 1. It's the reason I switched back when 5 was still in beta.

Thanks for noticing... I know about two glitches in this demo, but the thing is that it's very hard to record these flashes (it seems like fun, but it's not :) So I guess I'll stick to this for now, if I have time I'll re-record it later on, but I have lots of work (I'm working on the second part now).
