I Am Blogging About Welcome Screen Again...

Guest Author

I've been using the daily builds of 5.5 for quite some time now... I know some other people already blogged about it, but I just love the new welcome screen. It's a great idea to have fast access to most recent articles and blogs and useful links in the welcome screen. You know, best ideas don't have to be original :)

Yeah i just saw this the other day, its HEAPS better than what was previously there. It works too, because i found myself clicking on something and checking it out, i probably wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

A bit OT, but do you know what's the status on Subversion access?

Hey Roumen, I kinda like it too - that's how I found my way here today! Hope to see you around MPK or at JavaONE. :)

Re: SVN - I believe beta should live go to update center this week (at least I hope because we're announcing it on NB day :)

Shane, I'll be in MPK today, tomorrow and on Friday. On Thursday at 12:00 Geertjan has some kind of a blogging session, I will most probably be there as well.

Want to get lunch? I work 2 blocks from MPK, across the street from the starbucks.

I'd agree, except that the current implementation is really rather slow \^\^"

What's slow about it? It works fast for me... what is slow - loading of the RSS or opening of the welcome screen?

Rich - I would like to go for lunch... how about on Thursday? We could come with Geertjan a bit after 1 p.m. - I'll check with Geertjan if he's available.

Loading of the screen. It has decoupled with the loading of its content quite a bit now, but still causes an inevitable lag on IDE's startup. Oh well.

I reported the problem to our performance QA team.

Anyway, some issues are worth to duplicate.

    Alex is right,
we know about starup regression caused by new welcome. Part of the regression has already been fixed, but it is still not as fast as it was before, so this part of cake is still under investigation. If you are interested, or you can help, see

Is there another IDE that has a clean and useful welcome page like this? Netbeans seems to be ahead of the curve... always!

It's neat, but a bit too textual..., how about some icons and some background images. Somebody ought to throw in a few UI improvements.
    But, a nice addition indeed!
