Why Is Google Doing This?

Friday puzzle: why is Google doing this? Visit the following link and zoom out:

Spot on Google map with zoom level 23 in the middle of nowhere

Is that an easter egg? Is there a map in such detail for the whole world? Is Google going to take over the world? Too many questions and too few answers...
Comments:

Why? Just for fun. They can do things "just for fun" in google.com :-)

Maybe, the answer is a bit more ridiculous:
There have always been ghosts in the machine. Random segments of code, that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul. Why is it that when some robots are left in darkness, they will seek out the light? Why is it that when robots are stored in an empty space, they will group together, rather than stand alone? How do we explain this behavior? Random segments of code? Or is it something more? When does a perceptual schematic become consciousness? When does a difference engine become the search for truth? When does a personality simulation become the bitter mote… of a soul?

Actually,I think it is part of a deal with National Geographic for including some high-res photos marked by an overlay in Google Earth.

Is it just me, or does the guy on the upper right of the hole seem to be looking up?

I noticed that, too!

I heard the same thing as Rafael. The reason the guy is looking up is because the photos were taken from a plane and a plane flying overhead in rural Africa probably doesn't blend in. See the Google blog post for details on NG content.

Also, to directly answer your question, Photos on Google Maps. The end is interesting: "If you're a business owner, you can now upload photos of your business to Google Maps using the free Local Business Center."
