What's Up with NetBeans 5.5.1?

You might have heard that the next release of NetBeans will be 5.5.1 (before the major and "I just can't wait for it" NetBeans 6.0). It is indeed true, it's a rather minor release whose main feature is support for Sun Java System Application Server 9.1. There will be some important bugfixes, too, current list can be found using this query. There were discussions about support for JBoss 5, which hasn't been released yet, but we want to support it as soon as possible.
Comments:

Just a FYI, Sun Application Server 9.1 is the same as GlassFish v2 which adds Clustering support, JAX-WS 2.1, WSIT, JBI, and of course performance enhancements including startup.

Any chance we may get support for Oracle's applicaiton server? I know that it has been mentioned a few times in the email group about this being a nice thing to have.

Roumen, I assume that backwards compatibility to netbeans 5.5 - java web applications will still be compatible? or do we need to do some re-configuration ?

Darrin, can you ask at Oracle's forums? NetBeans is easily extensible so if enough of developers ask at Oracle, they might contribute the plug-in. Currently I don't think there is enough bandwith to develop this at Sun, because there are just too may other high-priority things. However support for more application servers is one of the goals of NetBeans 6 so it may happen for NB 6. Chris, yes, 5.5.1 should be fully compatible with 5.5.
