Quake2 in Java at 267 FPS

I could not resist and tried the Java port of Quake 2 called Jake 2 via webstart. It works great, you only need the quake2 data files (the demo installer can be downloaded e.g. from here). With JOGL it looks exactly like the old native version.

The interesting part is of course the performance - I got 60 frames per second in 1280x1024 fullscreen with JOGL version. I admit my Nvidia 6800gt is not a bad graphical card but still not bad :) It would be interesting to see newer games like Halflife 2 running in Java for performance comparison with their native versions. It would be really cool if you could run more such games via webstart - the games may not require an installation. Just click and play.

Update: I just tried the LWJGL version in 1280x1024 fullscreen. 267 FPS. Amazing.
Comments:

The jogl frame rate (60 fps) is limited by your monitor's refresh rate (vertical sync). Disable it in the graphics driver properties and you will see nearly the same result as with lwjgl.

I see! Thanks for the tip.

Yep, it worked, now the JOGL FPS screams when I disable vert sync.
