Jonathan Schwartz on Sun's open-source business strategy

As an evangelist, I often get asked the following question at conferences:

How does Sun make money on open source?

Although I do have an aswer to this question, it is better to provide an answer directly from our CEO, Jonathan Schwartz. I just read this Q&A with Jonathan and thought it was a very clear explanation of Sun's open source business strategy. I'd like to mention that Sun has been open sourcing lots of software during last fiscal year (including the crown jewels like Java, and Solaris before that) while the software business grew by 13% during last fiscal year. So it is clear that Sun's open source strategy is paying off.

Comments:

That's an interesting number you gave - software revenue growing by 13%. Where did you get that from? Despite promises to break out software revenues in the earnings statement back in January 2006 (see http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/01/06/73654_HNsunrevenue_1.html), the latest earnings still combines hardware and software under "Products" (http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/investor/earnings_releases/pr/2007-q4.html).

I took the number from the interview with Jonathan Schwartz (linked in the blog entry).

Thanx - saw that as well. Still, Jonathan hasn't made good on his promise, so he can tell us software revenue increased by 50%, and we couldn't check... :-)
