How to Keep Developers

I just finished reading this article about developers. It's an interesting read with a couple of insights into developer's minds I can confirm from my past experiences.

Hi Roumen, just read the article and it really makes sense.

Hello Roumen Frankly the article annoyed the hell out of me - mostly because of it's simplistic, manipulative approach to developer motivation. So that's how we do management - don't think so! You run a great Blog though! Regards Jim Fergusson

Well, it doesn't for sure mention all the motivators. In my last job I was a project manager and although at the beginning I thought that developers are "better people", I realized most of them are actually after money, interesting challenges, fun, they want to learn new technologies, work in a good team... all that stuff was mentioned in the article. Maybe it's a bit annoying that somebody is studying these factors, but it's interesting for sure.

Hello Roumen OK - Maybe I was over the top - but I would'nt call this article a 'study of the factors' - just seems to be stating the trite and obvious old 'people management' to me - anyway I just hate the thought of being manipulated, or manipulating anyone else in such a simplistic way - people (includes Developers) are pretty complex and interesting don't you think - and can detect phoney 'incentives' a mile away. I'm sure NetBeans, the best IDE in the world (in my opinion) was the result of more than a 'Public Relations Campaign' Cheers Jim

I agree, people are much more complex and interesting than how this article subscribes them. However it is good that these things are discussed because some managers for instance don't realize how much important it is for developers to get new challenges and work with interesting technologies. Yes, NetBeans is created in a complex way by all kinds of different people... :)
