How Do You Like The New Icons?

Like them or not?

Hi, for me it looks more GTK positive... Although I am using KDE it looks fine, especially file type icons (java, ant, etc.)

Don't like them, looks like it was done for kids...

You know the unofficial poll?

Posted by Ramon on únor 11, 2007 at 06:17 dop. CET #

Don't like them, looks like antiquated gnome icons.

Depends, the new file type / project type icons look nice, as well as package etc. icons. But the toolbar icons - well fresh new look, but somehow it seems they could look more professional, you know.

They look good but don't play as nice with the XP and Aqua look and feels as the current icons.

Ooh... of course I meant GNOME, not GTK...

Posted by Michal Hlavac on únor 11, 2007 at 08:01 dop. CET #

why not let users choose from a number of sets of icons, using the options window

Posted by geertjan on únor 11, 2007 at 08:02 dop. CET #

Not that much really..

Too big! Desk space is precious. Icons should be as small as possible. Otherwise if I narrow the window, they disappear.

Posted by Jim Rome on únor 11, 2007 at 08:36 dop. CET #

Hi Roumen, the icons in the projects tab and the editor are perfectly fine, but I believe in my humble opinion that the icons in the toolbar are focused for didactic application for children.

I usually don't care about icon sets (I use IceWM on Linux just because I want speed, not fancy features). Nonetheless, I'd say that 5.5 current set is good enough; if any, I'd enhance meaning of Run vs. Debug vs. Attach Debugger icons, and I can't see that new ones are any better in that.

And I also have to agree with those saying that the new icon set looks childish, and with Jim Rome stating that they should be as small as possible (while still being meaningful, of course). Maybe the best option for NetBeans team would be to allow users to select different icon sets, and add, instead of replace, new icon sets on NB 6.0.

These icons are too big, eating too much space. Why giving the priority to those icons (indeed, the displayed screenshot includes other icons at a different size) ? I feel they don't play well with the L&F of the other parts of the IDE. I think too they look childish.

Posted by Dominique on únor 11, 2007 at 12:07 odp. CET #

Big improvement. I'd probably prefer small icons to be the default rather than large as I like as much room as possible dedicated to source editing. What do the debugging icons look like now? (they were ugly).

Posted by Jason on únor 11, 2007 at 12:32 odp. CET #

At first sight I thought I didn't like them. But that's not completely true. I don't like the big one.. they look really weird. But the small ones are nice & slick. So I would say that if you make those icons in main icon bar smaller, it would be way nicer than these big ones.

Posted by Tomas on únor 11, 2007 at 12:40 odp. CET #

Please, no, everything else if fine, but not the toolbar icons. Please!

Posted by Rohan on únor 11, 2007 at 01:50 odp. CET #

is it the "NetBeans for babys" version ? I really hope you created support for theme where we can easily come back to the other icons ?

Posted by Vincent Brabant on únor 11, 2007 at 03:17 odp. CET #

I agree with geertjan, let the users choose from a set of icons in the Tools->Options dialog.

Posted by netPaladin on únor 11, 2007 at 03:26 odp. CET #

The project and navigator icons are excellent! but the toolbar needs slick and smaller icons. May be a "tango" based icon theme will satisfy all platforms.

It is OK to me. Fresh look and new feeling.

No please!! Especially the toolbar icons. They're an eyesore. And, to add to what Romain mentioned, they simply don't go well with \*any\* of the standard desktop L&F's. Horribly out of place. Please shoot them down in the UI review.

New icons are definitly step forward, neat and stylish. I am looking forward for nb6. Bigger and more annonation icons are imho great. As for toolbar, I rely on shortcuts and keep it off all the time in current nb release and i will do so in nb6 too. But ... they are bit too big and bit too childish for my taste :-)

Well my very first impression..was...not so good. Not they are completely bad..but ..the first thing i thought was ..NO!

They go very good with my gnome desktop.

From a netbeans UI perspective it's nice to see some attention being paid to it, soo it's kind of good to see some new icons. I'd have to say though, they aren't really up to scratch, the look that the icons are going for does not really sit style wise with other applications/operating system. I'm not scared of change, i think the icons NEED to be changed, i just think this is the wrong change, styled for kids.. this is a development ide not a fluffy toy! To support a few others, the look does not sit consistently on ANY platforms in my opinion. Please read the Microsoft and Apple icon design specifications and perhaps the tango project style guidelines, pick a consistent colour pallete, there is no consistent look here, there also looks to be icons from various styles/sets. At first i thought cool, 10 minutes later sanity kicked in and i realised how i would probably have to look at these things for at least another year, no thanks.. lets try some new icons, but not these ones. Theres plenty of great icon designers, theres plenty of great icon style guidelines.. use them.

First impressions would say that I'm working in a "toy" and not a true IDE. My $.02.

Maybe you could ask Everaldo(.com) for to create cute icons for netbeans (:

Really nice icons ;) GTK+ like... really neat ;) Oh and the svg editor is very nice too.. I look forward to try it ;) Is there any plans of integrating an SVG editor to NetBeans ? (or maybe there's already a plugin that I don't know about ;) ) Take care Roumen

Posted by Laurent M on únor 12, 2007 at 01:48 odp. CET #

Well, the icons appear a little large and with other toolbars and plugins, space is limited. Also, I think to my eye the color combos set off the icons better, but I think the hues are more cartoon-like, i.e. childlike. Certainly a different look, but the ones on 5.5 are probably ok. I like the 5.5 icons better. Regarding these simple math questions I always see in your blogs, I guess the answer would depend on which base your thinking of, is it base 10?

Posted by Fred on únor 12, 2007 at 06:56 odp. CET #

Use Everaldo icons!!!! You can integrate Netbeans to KDE's look and fell easily. Gnome icons are old-fashioned. I think.

Posted by Miguel on únor 13, 2007 at 12:52 dop. CET #

They look a little toy-ish.

Posted by Kim on únor 13, 2007 at 05:44 dop. CET #

The Windows L&F is already childish, kind of Fisher Price, I just don't get why people is whining about the toolbar icons ;-) OTOH, there is the option tu use the small size of the icons in the view menu, isn't it? Last but no least, I'm very glad those horrible squared icons that appeared in the margin of the editor to mark breakpoints, etc. are finally gone.

nice icons. the actual icon set looks too shiny

Posted by Mauricio on únor 13, 2007 at 06:36 odp. CET #

I don't like, they're too big and too childish for me. As already said in previous comments, the ability to choose a theme from the options should be very nice.

Posted by Charlie on únor 14, 2007 at 12:18 odp. CET #

Getting rid of the metal blue color undertone was a good step

Posted by Ramon on únor 15, 2007 at 09:18 dop. CET #

Too big and too childish. Try to find some inspiration in XCode.
