the AMISH massacre

oh god.. as if things werent bad enough… yet another school shooting, this time at a one room amish school in rural Lancaster, Pennsylvania. WHo in the world would have thought that the amish scool would fall victim to this ongoing violence. USATODAY reported that 6 kids were dead. I just cannot understand whats going on with these school shootings increasing in number. The shooter was among the dead too according to an AP report.

The shooter was among the dead, and a number of people were injured, said state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig.

“There are a number of people dead,” Striebig said. “The exact number I do not know yet.”

The county coroner said at least six people were killed in the shooting.

Police surrounded the one-room school late Monday morning, and the Lancaster County 911 website reported that dozens of emergency units were dispatched to a “medical emergency” at 10:45 a.m.

Two hours later, about three dozen people in traditional Amish clothing, hats and bonnets stood near the small school building speaking to one another and to authorities. At least two ambulances had left the scene, and at least one person was taken on a stretcher to a medical helicopter.

The Amish school is in Bart, in southeastern Lancaster County, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Philadelphia. Amish children attend schools until 8th grade (according to the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Web page) There are about 25,000 Amish in Lancaster County (Raber’s 2004 Almanac).

In a rural amish county with such a small population and children who go to school upto the 8th grade, I wonder who’d go so haywire to go on such a rampage.

Planet Sun

Whats up with planetsun ?? The domain seems to have expired... However Planet Sun Can still be accesed via Did we ever own that domain ? or was it owned by somebody else altogether and just happened to have the "sun" name associated with it ? or was this a sun thing ? I'm so confused...

UPDATE : It looks like David Edmondson owns the domain. So here's a note. David, could you please renew the domain, I believe that a whole bunch a folks have it bookmarked, and some "squatter" is gonna take over soon... and put all those who have bookmarked it through some painful surprises when the expected does not appear.

In case you are not interested in renewing it, transfer it over to me, and I'll keep it alive forever.. I'm also sure that Pat would be also willing to take over the tab.... He currently runs planetidentity.

every blog on this server has suddenly started to display :

" #showEntryLinkbacks(org.roller.pojos.wrapper.WeblogEntryDataWrapper@2ac4f464) "

right in between the blog post and the post comments form. I wonder if there's a rollerweblogger upgrade in progress or if something funky is going on. I took a quick glance of the rollerweblogger javadocs and could not find org.roller.pojos.wrapper. There does exist org.roller.pojos.WeblogEntryData, but no org.roller.pojos.wrapper.WeblogEntryDataWrapper

Does anybody know what may probably be happening ?

OH ! Reilly !!

{{someone just pointed me to this}}

any O'Reilly Book you wanna use for reference has been published online (I believe without permission from O'Reilly, because if O'Reilly wanted to do this, it would be done on the O'Reilly site.) @

and, It's not just O'Reilly, It's CISCO's CCNA, CCNP & CCDP books too.

WOW !!! aint the folks who run these servers concerned about copyright issues ??

The rest of stuff on the site is in russian and I just cannot figure out the rest, But I see links to solaris stuff, russian edition of PC Magazine, conveniently replicated over.

Is this High Availability ;-)

Referer Spam or A Sequel to Full Monty ;-)

NOTE : This is just to tantalize you. (PS: "TANTALIZE: a word I used from a personal email conversation just for the kicks & because I had nothing special to blog about today...)

Kim recently posted an article on LID-SPAM SPAM, OR MONTY PYTHON?. Well it kinda disturbed me. But Hey !! Things happen in blogdom. This new media of interaction has yet to be exploited to its fullest. Its exploitation chart is in its infancy right now. Anyways, I got curious on who's visiting my blog and checked my referer list (a service that my blog host kindly provides me with).
and I have something thats a kicker too ;-) check out the following screenshot from my referer list. Interesting aye ??

Whats interesting is that Kim's blog post referer link is SMACK right in the middle of it. Well, there were some more of there bad referers way down my list, but this block was interesting and caught my attention as my identity idol's blog post link was in-between a series of these miscreant links.

However the inference is not that this referer list is from some smart alec trying to obtain traffic. Thats what the motive of spamdexing is (at least according to this wikipedia definition). I do not publish referer links, and whoever did this gains absolutely nothing.

But what I'm trying to figure out is what this referer would have to do with absolutely any kind of return on investment ? (time or money). Could someone explain that to me please... or publish something out there that is a informative resource for referer spammers to "refer" to prior to running their bots... EG: gullible and non gullible resources available for spamdexing...

However Word Based Filtering could help eliminate that. Could someone @ rollerweblogger incorporate this into their next release.. It's something I believe would be a nice to have.

ciao for now, will post something of value soon...

irr-relevant point to ponder on..

Dumb or Dumber ? I think that this is just plain stupid on the governments part...
PS: Dont read just the title, read the entire post

"The issues are much more than giving me a visa," said Mehta, who is the president of the International Council for Science, whose members are the national scientific academies of many countries. "Humiliating experience apart, even the thought I could be denied a visa -- I could not have imagined it."

In a statement, the International Council for Science expressed "grave concern at the hostile treatment" of Mehta at the U.S. Consulate in Madras. "It clearly illustrates that, despite some progress, all is far from well with regards to the visa policies and associated practices for scientists wishing to enter the USA," the organization said.

and as a sequel to "Liar Liar" Ereli said

We try to treat everybody fairly. We certainly think we did so in this case, frankly. And we look forward to him having a good trip to the United States

Next Generation Web (definitely not 2.0)

I had posted a reference to the term "Web 2.0" a little while ago on my blog. But while I got absorbed in the term 2.0, there were others who were way ahead:

WOW !! the google search results for terms like "web 2.0","web 3.0","web 4.0","web 5.0","web 6.0","web 7.0","web 8.0","web 9.0" all yield several results. I guess it's all about an effort to get recognition by associating the terms with product releases just to say that the products are way ahead of the game... the silliest strategy I have ever seen.

I wonder what the end version would be : Web n.OH ! ?

Google Does Evil

Here's an interesting read on on Google Does Evil.

Google stands revealed as an immoral enterprise.

To Google, money is more important than ethics. Greed triumphs over truth.

It's like Bush defending Western values by torturing people.

Sergey and Larry are cowards. Devoid of principle. Hypocrites. Evil doers. Their mothers, I hope, are ashamed of them.

Libertarian Cartel

The Libertarian Cartel. I guess you all wonder what it's all about. Well read this. In short it's

Cartels are prohibited by antitrust laws in most countries; however, they continue to exist nationally and internationally, formally and informally. Note that a single entity that holds a monopoly by this definition cannot be a cartel, though it may be guilty of abusing said monopoly in other ways.
& the Libertarian Cartel is nothing but a derivative of this definition.
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.
Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations, 1776

UPDATE : This is jusy a FYI... Follow up with wikipedia on what the Libertarian Cartel stands for or on how to join it.

Are Comments a Bloggers Liability ?

SEO Book's Aaron Wall was sued earlier this week by for alleged inaccuracies and lies appearing in comments other people have left on his blog. If this case goes to trial, it'll set an important precedent in the blogging community and the Internet at large, answering a critical question, particularly for business blogs: are the comments others leave on your blog a legal liability?

Comment Away !!! I wonder what a blogger is responsible for and what he's not ? Are the rules of engagement for bloggers defined anywhere ?

Steve Ballmer vows to "kill" Google

According to this, this, this, this, this and this reports, Steve Ballmer has apparently vowed to "kill" Google. The allegation was filed in Washington state court as part of the on-going legal battle between Google and Microsoft regarding Google's hiring of Kai-Fu Lee, a former Microsoft employee. Well, the news media is abuzz with reports on Steve Ballmer's alleged threats, but what disturbed me most was the following excerpt from the report :

At some point in the conversation, Mr. Ballmer said: 'Just tell me it's not Google, "Lucovosky said in his statement. Lucovosky replied that he was joining Google. 'At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office,' Lucovosky recounted, adding that Ballmer then launched into a tirade about Google CEO Eric Schmidt. 'I'm going to f\*\*\*ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f\*\*\*ing kill Google.'
When I tried to google around for more information on this, I stumbled on several posts like this, this, this, this, this, this and this on an email spam that seems to have originated from a gmail account.

Well, What makes me really wonder is, IF, a email spam is the core issue here, why is CNET having this post up in the first place. News reports from CNET are considered pretty credible, and that makes me wonder if this is a hoax or if it's for real... Guess, Thats one thing we'll all be wondering about for the next few days to come... And hey !! if this is "true", we've got someone who's gonna have to take some anger management classes pretty soon...

UPDATE : This has hit the wires.

NO Comments Please

Yes, I have decided to disable comments on this blog. I am also trying to disable trackbacks. The aspiration behind enabling trackbacks and comments were an admirable one. But however, it has been brutally slaughtered by spam and spammers. The sheer horror of ping after ping pushing mother/son incest and bestiality links have dampened my feelings about blogging being an excellent communication tool. As Tom Coates puts it :

Trackback is dead : It has been killed by the exploitation of human beings quite prepared to desecrate the work of tens of thousands of people in order that they should scrabble together a few coins. It has been killed by the experience of an inbox overwhelmed by the automated rape of our creative endeavours.

In a way it should have been predictable from the beginning we should probably all have spotted that functionality that allows individuals to place links on other people's sites could be exploited by spammers. Some people did spot these problems, but even they had no sense of the scale. Their responses were at best muted. But now I think we have to accept that the evidence is in. The situation is clear and it is not good. We're engaged in an arms race with the worst kind of people, an arms race that has raged across other communications media and which we show no sign of winning. For me, the negative experience of dealing with trackbacks has long-since overwhelmed the benefits it brings.

Of course the problem isn't restricted to Trackbacks. The systems we're using to manage comments on our sites are probably under even more strain from spammers. The only reason I'm prepared to put up with this in the short term is because the comments seem to be more useful to more people at the moment. But I'm clear in my mind ~ we're rapidly approaching a crisis here as well, and it is likely to be one that ends in the abandonment of comment systems as well.

RIGHT SAID Tom, I am following your footsteps and disabling Comments and Trackbacks here too...
Tom's not the only one who believes in no comments and no trackbacks, Instapundit and Andrew Sullivan, Jonathan Schwartz, Mike Chambers, & BoingBoing to name some of the most widely read blogs, don’t have comments enabled either. But HEY !! Youre' always welcome to email me directly.

PS: Could someone show me how to turn off Trackbacks in RollerWebLogger ?

UPDATE : I have reset my blog settings to enable me to moderate my comments more efficiently. However Comments would be enabled only for a period of 30 days from the posting date of each blog entry. After the initial elapsed time of 30 days from the post, comments would automatically be disabled and I'd communicate via email. Hopefully with this approach, I would still have a 2 way conversation going rather than a egoistic one way dialogue.
