IPSO is a Facto

IP, it has been said, is the narrow waist of the internet. It is the unifying factor that makes billions of machines work together. There are many different physical media (optical fiber, copper, RF etc) and there are many different high-level protocols (HTTP, IMAP, FTP etc), and yet all these coexist in something we call the internet because they all share the Internet Protocol (IP). This protocol was designed to support substantial computers, but as smaller devices become more capable more and more devices are able to join what we know as the internet by implementing IP. It is pretty mind boggling the effect this one protocol has had on all our lives already... and there's more to come....
Sun is a founding member of the new alliance, Internet Protocol for Small Objects, IPSO. Sun, Cisco, Atmel, Freescale and many others have joined forces to promote IP on small devices. This is a step toward the internet of things where everything, everywhere is part of the internet. For more information, read press release, the white paper, or see the web site.
About the IPSO Alliance: The IPSO Alliance is a global non-profit organization serving the various communities seeking to establish the Internet Protocol as the basis for connecting smart objects by providing coordinated marketing efforts available to the general public. The Alliance's purpose is to provide a foundation for industry growth through building stronger relationships, fostering awareness, providing education, promoting the industry, generating research and creating a better understanding of IP and its role in connecting smart objects.
