A Silicon Valley Native's Guide To Layering

As a Silicon Valley native, I knew nothing about layering clothes when I arrived here. I mean, my winter attire was basically:

  • Sandals
  • Socks (on occasion)
  • Undershorts
  • Pants
  • Sun-branded t-shirt
  • Light jacket

For a bit of a perspective, here are today's highs and lows for both locations:

   Location High Low
   Sunnyvale 48F/9C 36F/2C
   Beijing 30F/-1C 15°F/-9C

And, another big difference is that I drove pretty much everywhere in the Valley. I'd go from a heated house, to a heated car, to a heated office, and so forth. Here, I'm most often walking or riding my electric bike.

Okay, so here's the ordered list:

  1. Undershorts
  2. Thermal underwear (bottoms)
  3. Socks (over thermal underwear)
  4. T-shirt (tucked into thermals)
  5. Pants
  6. Thermal underwear (top, tucked into pants)
  7. Shirt (tucked into pants)
  8. Sweater (over pants)
  9. Scarf
  10. Heavy jacket
  11. Gloves
  12. Surgical mask (optional)
  13. Hat/beanie (optional)

Now, be forewarned... if you happen to get sick here, and you haven't been properly layering, it will be considered your fault, regardless if any or all of the following have occurred:

  • Your significant other is sick
  • Your child/children are sick
  • Every kid in their class is sick
  • Your visiting relatives are sick
  • Everyone on the bus you take to work is sick
  • People you pass on the street are sick, and are coughing on you
