I have been dissatisfied for quite awhile with the Western reporters... not just in how they cover news from China and other parts east, but news in general. It has seemed that ignorance or a political motivation has colored what is billed to be impartial reporting. And, most of all, I have bemoaned the lack of historical perspective in their articles and stories.
I just ran across a story on the BBC News web site which absolutely flies in the face of the above:China torch relay: Nanjing
In it, Dr. Mitter talks about a horrible atrocity (the Rape of Nanking) and the years since in a way that grounded in facts... yet is still able to insert his own voice into the article in a way that is guiding but in no way intrusive. I actually wept when I finished reading it.
Kudos, Dr. Mitter, Kudos.
