Fixing Up Backups And A New Tag Cloud

For the three days leading up to Thanksgiving, with half of the Orca team on vacation, I'm trying to get to some the things that have been sitting in my "to do" mail folder for weeks.

One of these was to try to find out why I could no longer backup all my blog entries locally. With the recent introduction of Roller 3.0, it seems I need to adjust one of the lines in my config.properties file.

blog_url=http://blogs.sun.com/roller/xmlrpc

now becomes

blog_url=http://blogs.sun.com/roller-services/xmlrpc

There's probably a really good reason why the Roller team changed this and failed to allow the old URL to continue to work, but I've no idea what it is. Roller's major version number was bumped from 2 to 3, so I suppose changes like are to be expected.

Now I've backed up all my blog entries (all 890 of them), I can generate a new tag cloud. Again, I had to make some changes to my tagcloud script because the format of the "<p id="permalink"> ... </p>" tag in each of the backed up blog entries has changed.

For those interested, there is a blog post describing what this is all about. Now that Roller has it's own tagging system, this could be so much simpler, but I really don't have the time or the inclination to update all of those 890 blog entries.

The JavaScript for the links for each of the tag cloud tags still sucks, but that's one of the reasons why I'm reading books like Modern Web Design. Hopefully I'll soon know how to fix this up and have a nice way of easily getting to the blog posts associated with each tag.
