word of the day: coprophagy

The word of the day today is coprophagy.

We have a few domestic rabbits on the ranch and a whole bunch of the indigenous desert rabbits. We've had quite a population explosion in desert rabbits this year, in part I believe, because one of my neighbors has been shooting coyotes. The wild rabbits have taken to eating iceplant, which is a succulent and not very nutritious, due to the general lack of food this summer.

The rabbit digestive system is designed to handle a very high fiber diet. The first pass through, the food is converted to cecotropes which are emitted via the anus and then eaten. Rabbit fanciers insist they aren't feces, but if it walks like a duck...

Scott McNealy often talks about Sun eating its own dog food. I'm glad we aren't in the fertilizer business...
