Leaders and followers

Last week, an article in eWeek talked about HP's new server fan design. HP has come up with a good improvement for cooling dense, high power servers with fans. They even have 20 patents around the technology (congrats!). The article also describes this as revolutionary rather than evolutionary. I disagree. Moving heat around rather than eliminating the heat altogether is a follower's solution, not a leader's solution. The best way to deal with heat is to not generate it in the first place. Since HP doesn't control the technology which generates their heat, the best they can do is move it around.
