GlassFish V3 technology preview available

Preliminary work has already started on GlassFish V3.  Some of the main focus areas are:

  • to compose V3 as a set of modules which are dynamically activated as needed,
  • to build V3 so it is extensible to new types of containers, modules, etc.,  and
  • to allow V3 to be embedded in other code.

Although I will become much more involved in V3 very soon, I have had a chance already to see some of the work that has been done so far.  Jerome and Kohsuke have written up some notes already, Jerome has blogged about V3, and we have made a technology preview of V3 available for download.

Naturally, at such an early stage this is not ready for production deployments, but for example you can deploy and run php and JRuby apps as well as web apps.

So I'm curious Tim, what is planned for v3 in terms of the ACC? Reduced codebase size? Customizeable JNLP files? Faster startup times? I really like your work so far and am excited to see the ACC evolve.

Hi, Ben. Thanks for your interest and the kind words.

The two items you mentioned are very definitely on the "want-to-do" list. Specific plans for ACC changes are still very fluid as work on V3 gathers momentum. There is little question about how to shrink the footprint; it's just a matter of doing it. As for permitting customization of the generated JNLP I have quite a few ideas myself, but I hope to post an initial proposal publicly soon so the community as a whole can help direct what we do. When I publish that proposal I'll send a note to the users@glassfish.dev.java.net mailing list and the GlassFish forum at http://forums.java.net/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=56 so watch those places.

Thanks for your interest.

- Tim
