Sun Studio Wiki

Thanks to Eric Boutilier over at genunix.org, we now have a place to put Sun Studio related information on a publicly accessible wiki.  I added some older FAQ entries that I've been accumulating, and some other pages.  The genunix wiki was created to support the OpenSolaris effort, so it's good for us to be represented there.  Eric says it's okay for us to put our Sun Studio Linux information there too.

I also have a mail folder called FAQs which contains pointers to all the forum threads and email messages that I wanted to put in the FAQ.  Unfortunately, my list of FAQs-to-be is much longer than my actual list of FAQs.

I've got a whole bunch of internal wiki pages related to possible future directions for dbx and possible RFEs for dbx from back when I was spending more time on dbx instead of the compilers.  So I'm hoping to find time to mine those pages for good stuff to make public.  I think it would really help to motivate the Sun Studio engineers if we could get a good dialog going with our users about which features they want to see next.

If you create a new Wiki topic related to Sun Studio, don't forget to mark it with the category tag by appending this to the bottom of the page:

[[Category:Sun Studio]]

Two genunix Wiki pages to check out are:

If you have some ideas about stuff to add, but you're too shy to jump in, go ahead and add some comments to this blog entry, or just email me at chris.quenelle@sun.com with any ideas you have.

Maybe there could be a page warning about the common portability issues between g++ and sunCC (with links to the places where these are already documented). For instance: - overloading on linkage (which may disappear on linux when studio adopts the g++ mangling) - mangling issue with const/non-const or typedef - with stlport4 on solaris, the c\* headers put functions in the std:: namespace only - no integer overload of the math functions - for locale support, use some other stl - a list of common g++ extensions like pretty-print, typeof, __attribute, asm and their sunCC alternatives when they exist

Thanks for that list Marc! I know there are issues there, and I have lots of saved email that's relevant, but I haven't gone through it all yet. I copied your comment and started parsing it out into a TODO list, so I could fill in the details as I run across them. If you have the time and energy it would be great if you would make a login on genunix and expand on your comments. http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/Sun_and_GCC_Compiler_Portability#C.2B.2B_Issues_.28TODO.29
