European capitals - TOP 20 by FLICKR uploads in 2006

Living in center of Prague means constantly encountering tourists from all over the world. Not that it would mind to me at all. No, I feel proud about that and the only discomfort I have from it is when I'm hurrying somewhere and I get stuck in tourist traffic jam. But I was always wondering how is Prague with tourists against other cities. Since I didn't find any numbers elsewhere and since I'm dedicated FLICR user I decided to play with their search engine. Following list is top chart of twenty most pictured European capitals in 2006 (see bellow notes how I got these results).

Notes:

\* I got these numbers by searching FLICKR for number of occurrence of all European capitals in tags of pictures (in ANY of all main languages and it's local name) which were uploaded during year 2006 (between 1st January 2006 and 31th December 2006).

\* I searched for number of "posted" pictures during last year instead of number of "taken" pictures because these results remain the same. However it seems that searched numbers tend to differ between particular queries. But this difference is rather small (not bigger then about +/- 300) and it shouldn't affect results. Hey guys from FLICKR, what is wrong?

\* These results don't directly express how were particular capitals popular between tourists.

\* Please take all of above results as very private and that I have no responsibility for them.

Return from tropical paradise – back in Prague's floods

It was just yesterday's morning when I was still in Kenya with it's temperature more than 30 degrees of Celsius. Now I am back in Prague with it's temperature just something above zero (with no sun). What a change! Hope I won't be cold.

Beside this there are floods in Czech republic. Here in Prague, they are not major. At least what I could see in center. But still there were built floods barriers, which were prepared after major floods in 2002.

Traveling these days is not easy... Winter struck Europe

There is a lot of snow here in middle Europe and it's understandable that trains are getting late. But one would say that it's predictable. Unfortunately Czech Railways (CD) are not capable of it. At the time when my train was supposed to leave to Prague we were informed by information panel, that it will be 15 minutes delayed..... The delay changed then to 25, 40, 60, 80 minutes.... If I knew this at once, I would take the bus.

Right now I am sitting in completely different train (I didn't want to risk and wait for my fast Eurocity from Wien) and If I am lucky enough, I will be in Prague only three hours later than were my first plans.

Goodbye BBC! I will miss you.

After 66 years of broadcasting in Czech, BBC stopped today its current affairs program. Czech language will totally disappear from BBC radio here in Czech republic by the end of January. The reason for closing Czech BBC redaction (and some other European and Asian) is to gain money for creation of TV for Arab world.

I am not happy with this decision and I am not alone in such feelings. Actually I am little bit angry at BBC for this step. Yes, it's selfish. We are now democratic country and our media have full freedom of speech. But I cannot rid of sensation that BBC was little bit more... I will miss you BBC!

Nuit du cinéma à Prague - almost eight hours in cinema

Yes, it's enough. I have never wanted to do such a crazy thing. It was this Friday's evening when I decided to take short walk to the downtown to see newly set up Christmas tree. Since I knew there is film festival of France film (Festival du film français) this week I went past the cinema where it take place. It was just coincidence that I just arrived there at 11pm when the Movie night was just starting. So I said to myself. Let's try the first movie and then I will see. When it was over and we were leaving the cinema it was about 6:45am...

There were four movies: Kilometré Zero (2004), No Man's Land (2005), Vodka Lemon (2003) and Intervention Divine (2001). Between the movies everybody was offered hot chocolate and crosants to survive till the 'Intervention Divine'. I liked the movies very much. There were not many happy ends in them but sometimes we could laugh little bit. At least this is the only thing how we can survive it and not get crazy. Movies were about old Iraqi regime, Yugoslavian conflict, situation in poor post Soviet states and Palestine conflict. A lot of stuff to think about...

So, you know, I was today little bit resting then to be able to go this evening finally to real French movie :-). I mean French and from France. Ahh Paris..... It was Doo Woop (2004) and it was Czech preliminary premiere. There were also director of this movie and three main actors.

The festival will finish on Monday. It worth to visit it.

OpenWeekend 2005 + Czech OpenSolaris Users Group (Saturday)

Today, there was the first day of OpenWeekend 2005 here in Prague. This year there are several talks and workshops about OpenSolaris. Today Robert Milkowski was talking about DTrace and Chris Armes from Sun was presenting OpenSolaris and our attitude to OpenSource. BTW, It's nice that IBM as general partner of OpenWeekend helped us to popularise OpenSolaris. Thanks guys!

People were then encouraged to go within our group of Prague's engineers at stage and ask questions about OpenSolaris.

After that Martin Červený met with people interested in Czech OpenSolaris Users Group and presented them his vision about its activities. Of course there were some pizzas available :-)

On Sunday there will be talk about security facilities in OpneSolaris and workshop introducing into OpenSolaris kernel. Both will be presented by Martin Červený.
