The Future of Kenai.com

This post has been modified since the original post on Jan. 27th 2010.

UPDATED (March 2nd 2010)

Hi Everyone,

We told you we would have an update in about a month and that time has come.

The plan of record has not changed. Work is on-going for migrating the Java.net domain over to the Kenai infrastructure and we will move the existing Kenai.com projects over to the Java.net domain as soon as we have everything in place.

The work will take a bit of time to complete, so please feel comfortable using Project Kenai while we work towards the final move to Java.net.

If you have any questions please continue to send them to the kenai-admin<at>sun.com alias. As always, we'll do our best to answers them.

Best Regards,

The Project Kenai Team

IMPORTANT UPDATE (Feb.5th 2010)

Gentlepeople,

In an effort to get information out to the Kenai community quickly, while trying to manage the integration of our two companies, I think we did a poor job at communicating our plans for Kenai.com to you. I would like to remedy that now. Our strategy is simple. We don't believe it makes sense to continue investing in multiple hosted development sites that are basically doing the same thing. Our plan is to shut down kenai.com and focus our efforts on java.net as the hosted development community. We are in the process of migrating java.net to the kenai technology. This means that any project currently hosted on kenai.com will be able to continue as you are on java.net. We are still working out the technical details, but the goal is to make this migration as seamless as possible for the current kenai.com projects. So in the meantime I suggest that you stay put on kenai.com and let us work through the details and get back to you later this month.

Thanks for your feedback and patience.

Bring out your dead.... bring out your dead.....

Since Halloween is tomorrow, I'll steal a line from the Monty Python movie, "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" to cover one of the new features recently added to Project Kenai.

Project Owners now have the ability to delete those pesty test projects, or projects that just never did make it off the ground.

If you're the project owner and there are no other project members (you can remove them if there are still some), you can go ahead and delete the project yourself.

Help keep Project Kenai active and vibrant by getting rid of those dead projects.

The Project Kenai team is working on other ways to manage the old and abandoned projects in the future, but this first step is a way that everyone can help out on their own.

So get to it, Bring Out Your Dead...... :-)

Some background Maintenance on Kenai.com

We've just been informed that the registration service that we rely on is going through maintenance on its service hardware starting on Friday, August 7th at 8:00PM and ending on Saturday, August 8th at 10PM Pacific time.  During this time, you will not be able to create new accounts on the Kenai.com site, nor will you be able to update your existing profile data or password.

The rest of the site should continue to function normally.  All Kenai specific services, such as SCM, Issue Tracking, etc. will not be effected.

As usual, if you experience anything, other then what is stated above, during this period, please send an email to kenai-admin<at>sun.com.

Sorry for the inconvenience.  We are working with this dependency to try and remove these continued interruptions.

A huge new feature added to Project Kenai -- Project Websites!

With the latest update to Project Kenai on Aug. 4th, we added the ability for each project to now have their own Website.

A Website is a set of web pages that you have uploaded to Project Kenai to use as your project's public home page. This home page is accessed through a web browser at the URL

http://your-project-name.kenai.com

This website is completely under your control. It does not have any of the automatic navigation you see with pages in Project Kenai, like the left navbar that links to your project features, the breadcrumbs list, or search. If you want the user to be able to navigate to your project, you must supply the links yourself.

A couple of the main advantages of this new feature are the ability to host a basic Maven repository and the display of JavaDocs with your own control over the CSS and layout of those docs. Of course just being able to display your project the way you want to, is also something that people have been asking for for some time now.

For complete details around how to implement the Website feature, and how to upload content to the site, please checkout the always informative Help pages.

As always, we're interested in your comments and feedback.  Don't hesitate to let us know what you think about this or any other feature on the site.  You can leave a comment here, post a topic to the Forums, or send an email to kenai-admin-AT-sun-DOT-com

What is Your Project on Kenai.com?

So many amazing projects now live at Kenai.com! From JRuby, to TwitterFX, to Alice, and more.  The community is building out some amazing projects for developers' participation.

But what about your project? Are you getting the level of community interest and participation that you need? If not,  there's some steps YOU can take to stir interest. First and foremost, provide as many details as you can on your project page.  How do you do this? Simple, from your "MyPage" click on "Manage" for any project you're administering and fill in information.  Make sure you have a solid project description; briefly outline what you're trying to accomplish, what technologies are involved, if you want developers' participation, etc.  Also, fill out the tag field with as many terms that map to your project; this will make it easier for interested parties to find your project from the project tag cloud.

 Manage Your Project

To learn more about how to manage your project, watch this brief screencast.

Also, if you want more exposure for your project, let us know! Send us an e-mail requesting us to highlight your project on Kenai.com's featured project section.  Or perhaps we can reference it on our Kenai Blog, in our Kenai Facebook community, or a mention on our Kenai Twitter voice.  Simply send your request to: kenai-admin<at>Sun<dot>com.

Furthermore, if you have the time, we can interview you on our Kenai BlogTalk Radio show! Again, just drop us a note, and we'll coordinate directly with you.

Lastly, socialize your project at Kenai.com through your social networks! Blog a lot, blog often! Twitter about it (use #projectkenai so it shows up in our feed, as well - more exposure for you!).

Let us help you make your code grow at Kenai.com!

Some background maintenance over this weekend

Hi folks,

One of the services that we rely on will be performing maintenance again this weekend. (Friday April 24th - Sunday 26th). There should be no downtime for the Kenai.com site and it's services, however new account creation and modifications to existing accounts will be unavailable on and off during this time. As always, if you experience something that does just doesn't seem right, drop us a note in the Forums or send an email to kenai-admin<at>sun.com

Thanks for your patience while the maintenance is performed.
