Back in July, when I started to work on the November 2015 issue of Profit, I was a very different person.
I didn’t expect that my world would be so totally upended. I didn’t anticipate that I would have to withdraw from the normal flow of daily life. I had no plan for how to retrench, reinvent, and rebuild myself and my family.
But forces beyond our control impose some inscrutable will upon us and we must, in turn, find a way to push back.
So today as I write this, I am a very different person. But I am still here because of a tremendous group of people who helped pick me up after life unexpectedly knocked me to the ground. So to Jan, Blair, John, Jen, Chris, Arianna, Rob, Jaime, Sheila, Monica, Bob, Richard, Kim, Karin, and others who helped keep Profit on track while I dusted myself off: thank you. Thank you all for reminding me that our relationships with each other matter most, at work and at home.
And I want to remind everyone: never forget the people who matter. When they are here, treat them with care. Tell them how important they are to you. Show them how much they mean to you.”
Service and support are words that appear regularly on the pages that follow—they are not mere words, but values that my Oracle colleagues exhibited over the past two months—to my benefit and to the benefit of Profit readers. I am forever grateful, and honored to work with you. I know you have my back. And I promise to have yours when you need me.
Now, I am a changed person. And I want to remind everyone: never forget the people who matter. When they are here, treat them with care. Tell them how important they are to you. Show them how much they mean to you. Never lose sight of their humanity. Always remember how important they are to your continued existence.
And to my best friend of 12 years: I miss you like crazy. I love you, kiddo.
