In the decade leading up to 2012, Martin Marietta, a construction materials company based in Raleigh, North Carolina, had experienced an average growth rate of nearly eight percent in annual earnings. The company by then had grown to nearly 5,000 employees with US$2.1 billion in yearly revenue. Dana Guzzo, senior vice president, chief accounting officer and chief information officer for the company, realized that the company needed a modernized enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform to keep up with and continue this growth. Guzzo decided that upgrading its current platform, Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.0, to Release 9.1 would enable the company to scale appropriately. “It was important for us to modernize the

“It was important for us to modernize the platform,” says Guzzo. “For the company in general, it was imperative for us to become current, since we hadn’t performed a major upgrade in a decade.” To complete the task, Guzzo turned to Jason Botts, vice president of Information Technology at Martin Marietta, to lead the implementation. Specific modern features in the new version were also needed. Employees needed direct access to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne through the internet, and through different mobile devices. “At the time,” says Botts, “we were tied to offline notification, communication, and approvals within JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, and that was particularly challenging.” To complete a purchase approval, for example, “someone had to notify the approver that there was an approval pending, and then that person had to find a computer and come in through a virtual desktop to run the approval.”A Modern ERP
IT executives at Martin Marietta selected Oracle Platinum Partner KPIT to support the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne upgrade due to the firm’s specialization in JD Edwards and its reputation of superior work in the industry. KPIT started by organizing design workshops assisting Martin Marietta to identify, analyze, map, and validate newer JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 functionalities. This enabled Martin Marietta to keep the functionalities that were important to them and to leverage new functionalities such as new mobility solutions available in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1. The final cutover was seamlessly executed over the weekend without any disruption to the business. The end results have been well worth the effort. According to Botts, “A key benefit that’s been realized is a platform that allows us to scale. We are better positioned for growth with this solution. And that has always been a concern.”
We specialize in providing value beyond the project. With our expertise in Oracle and our in-depth understanding of our customers’ industries and business, we are able to become their strategic partner.”–Baljeet Chhazal, Senior Vice President, KPIT
Botts says that extending purchase orders to mobile devices and through ordinary internet connections has also been a huge advantage: “Now it’s right in our users’ hands. They can be any place in the field, in the quarry, in their office. They can even be on vacation and receive the approval through email, click a link, and complete a purchase order approval.”A True Partner Throughout the Upgrade
For Botts, KPIT was essential to the success of the upgrade. “From start to finish, KPIT was with us hand in hand. Even through the go-live weekend, we had KPIT resources on premises with us 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
The partnership with KPIT has grown as a result of the upgrade. “We’ve looked at other ways that KPIT can support us,” says Botts. “KPIT established a foundation of knowledge around our culture, our business process, and our technology, and we’ve seen opportunities to take advantage of that familiarity.”
Baljeet Chhazal, KPIT’s senior vice president and global head of KPIT’s Oracle Business Unit, says, “Working with Martin Marietta was a prime example of how we work with our customers in a one-team approach. We specialize in providing value beyond the project.
