EPM Cloud: Expected Behavior When You Open Two Cloud Instances in the Same Browser or in Smart View

Tanya Heise
Sr Principal Technical Support Engineer

What happens if you open two EPM Cloud instances in the same browser or in Smart View?

Thank you to Nikki Ho, Member of the Technical Staff and Vinay Gupta, Consulting Member of the Technical Staff, for the presentation on this topic.

This blog will provide explain the following:

  • The behavior when one EPM Cloud instance is opened in one browser tab, and then another EPM Cloud instance is opened in another browser tab.
  • The behavior when one EPM Cloud instance is connected to Smart View as a private connection, and then another EPM Cloud instance is connected to as another private connection.

The behavior is based on:

  • Whether the two instances are in the same data center or different data centers
  • If they are in the same data center, whether the two instances are in the same ID domain or different ID domains
  • Whether an external Identity Provider (IdP) is set up for SAML-based SSO with the ID domains

Review the following behaviors and the expected results:

Same data center, same ID domain (same behavior whether SSO is configured or not):

  • Browser and Smart View behavior: After the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance connects without a login prompt. Both instances keep working until one is logged off, which logs off both instances.
    • Smart View exception: When both instances are for Profitability and Cost Management Cloud (PCMCS), after the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance displays a "User Authentication Needed“ error.

Same data center, different ID domains, SSO not configured:

  • Browser and Smart View Behavior: After the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance gives a prompt for login. Going back to the first instance prompts for login again. The same thing happens for the second instance.
    • Smart View exception: When both instances are for Profitability and Cost Management Cloud (PCMCS), after the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance displays a "User Authentication Needed“ error

Same or different data centers, different ID domains, SSO configured:

  • Browser and Smart View behavior: After the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance connects without a login prompt. Both instances keep working until one is logged off, which logs off both instances.
    • Smart View exception: When both instances are for Profitability and Cost Management Cloud (PCMCS), after the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance gives a "User Authentication Needed“ error.

Different data centers, different ID domains, SSO not configured:

  • Browser and Smart View behavior: After the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance gives a prompt for login. Both instances keep working. When one is logged off, the other is unaffected.
    • Smart View exception: When both instances are for Profitability and Cost Management Cloud (PCMCS), after the first instance is logged in, going to the second instance displays a "User Authentication Needed“ error.
