SmartView released

Guest Author

(in via Henri ; ) )

Sometimes it pays off to visit the other blogs of the EPM universe. If I had not checked my RSS feeds, I probably would have missed the release of SmartView So thanks to Henri for blogging about it. Some details I would like to mention here:

It is available as  patch 17322826 via MOS, or via OTN

This version adds support for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows 8
  • Microsoft Office 2013 (32- and 64-bit)
  • Microsoft Surface Pro tablet

You can upgrade to this release directly from Smart View 11.1.2.x and
When upgrading from release and earlier, Oracle recommends uninstalling Smart View before installing release

I will not go into detail about what this version can do and where the known issues are with it.
You can find all that information in the  readme here. I just re-posted this, to spread the word.

Welcome SmartView

SmartView is the only part of EPM / OBIEE that runs under There is no EPM version yet, so don't be too surprised not to find it on eDelivery.

I installed Smartview on an Excel 64bit.

After the installation I opened excel, played around with Smartview and everything seemed to work just fine. When I closed Excel still everything looked fine.

Starting with the second time when I opened Excel and closed it back down I am getting the notification "Excel does not work anymore ... looking for a solution".

    Any clue?

    Thanks a lot!

    Best regards

    Hello Christoph,

I ran a search on KM for that problem, but it seems not to be documented yet.

My experience says that if it only happens the second time, that you test it, there might be one hidden Excel task still running when kicking it off.

So here is what I would do.

    - reboot the client machine

    - check if Excel/SmartView work

    - close Excel down

    - now check the Task manager if there is still an excel Instance running

    - if NOT, try again and check if Excel/SmartView work OK

    - if YES, then kill that instance of Excel before attempting a new try

If your problem is related to stale Excel Instances as above, you may want to speak to Tech Support to have them check the whole thing. It might be a bug, or only related to your environment, but to judge that one would need to investigate a lot further.

    Good luck.

I did as you said but still the message comes each time I'm closing excel.

I need to clarify that it was working only the first time after installation and not always the first time after restarting the client machine.

Would it be possible to have my environment investigated?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hello Christoph,

I would assume so, if you are a customer.

In that case log an SR via MOS and see if Tech Support can help you.

Hi, I am trying to install a silent package via SCCM 2012 with the single installer and on Win 7 64 (regardless of Office version) the silent install hangs.

When I enable a basic UI during deployment to see what is happening I get "The Installation Package Could no be opened. Please verify this is a valid Windows Installer Package"

However if I perform the same command line locally, it will install no problem. Any ideas?

    1) Double click on the main SmartView.exe

    2) Open Windows Explorer

    3) Navigate to C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Downloaded Installations\{636A1348-F3F0-4141-AA20-D9BD885CADBE}

    4) The 32-bit or 64-bit .msi file will be downloaded depending on the version of Office installed. Use this file to install.

Please inform if SmartView allows direct DotNet programmability...I mean can I use C# and using SmartView exposed objects , fetch or manipulate OBIEE data on/thru Excel , which SmartView can certainly do using Macros from inside Excel directly..

If I start Ms-Excel Independantly on Windows OS, I can work fine with SmartView, But If I open Excel thru a C# Program using Interop-VBE, then the SmartView ToolBar/MenuTab is missing and cant work with SV and hence Smartview Macros donot run......Is ther some patch available to override this issue ..

    Dear Indrajit,

to my knowledge there is no patch for this very specific issue, but you may want to log a Service Request with Oracle Support and have them investigate this.

(Best would be if you could provide a simplyfied code snippet to demonstrate the issue, as that will get things progressed a lot faster)
