Remote Diagnostic Agent 8.02 is now available

(in via Maurice)

The Remote Diagnostic Agent 8.02 was released on 15 December 2013.

This version has five new Hyperion modules within the RDA profiles:

  • Collects Oracle Hyperion Financial Data Management Information (BI.FDM module)
  • Collects Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management Information (BI.HDM module)
  • Collects Oracle Hyperion Profitability & Cost Management Information (BI.HPC module)
  • Collects Oracle Hyperion Performance Scorecard Information (BI.HPS module)
  • Collects Oracle Hyperion Strategic Finance Information (BI.HSF module)

Note that Remote Diagnostic Agent requires the run of Hyperion profiles (not individual modules).  A Hyperion profile name begins 'Hyperion1112_' and concludes with the key module abbreviation in capitals.

It is recommended that the ORACLE_HOME of the Oracle database client be defined (set ORACLE_HOME=C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdk160_21) for the EPM Server hcve Tool (rda.cmd -T hcve) and Hyperion profiles which collect information from the Hyperion Oracle database registry.

Download the newest version via the Knowledge article:

"Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) - Getting Started"
[Doc ID 314422.1].

Java update alert: issue with EAS 11.1.2.3

(in via Nancy)

Customers using EPM 11.1.2.3 and a web browser to launch the Essbase Administration Services Console will lose the ability to launch EAS Console via the Web URL if they apply Java 1.7 build 45.

Development is currently investigating this issue.

Workaround:

If Java 1.7 Update 45 has been installed, it will need to be uninstalled and a previous version will need to be installed.

Older versions of Java are available in the Java Archive

Note:

Though it may work, Java 1.7 is not supported in previous versions of EAS.
(Exception for PSU 11.1.2.2.104 which introduced JRE 1.7 support in the 11.1.2.2 code line)

Customers running a version of EAS Console prior to 11.1.2.3 need to install the supported version of JRE.

Please follow this also in the Oracle Community

Update, 28 Feb 2014:
This issue is fixed in patch set update 11.1.2.3.003:
Available as:
patch 17609518 for the server and
patch 17609497 for the client component

EPM troubleshooting Utilities

(in via Maurice)

"
Are you keeping up-to-date with the latest troubleshooting utilities introduced from EPM 11.1.2.2? These are typically not described in product documentation, so you might miss references to them. The following five utilities may be run from the command line.

(1) Deployment Report was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2 (11 April 2012).
It details logical web addresses, web servers, application ports, database connections, user directories, database repositories configured for the EPM system, data directories used by EPM system products, instance directories, FMW homes, deployment distory, et cetera.
It also helps to keep you honest about whether you made changes to the system and at what times! Download Shared Services patch 13530721 to get the backported functionality in EPM 11.1.2.1.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/epmsys_registry.sh report deployment
(on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\epmsys_registry.bat report deployment (on Microsoft Windows).
The output is saved under
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\diagnostics\reports\deployment_report.html

(2) Log Analysis has received more "press".
It was released with EPM 11.1.2.3 and helps the user to slice and dice EPM logs. It has many parameters which are documented when run without parameters, when run with the -h parameter, or in the 'Readme' file. It has also been released as a standalone utility for EPM 11.1.2.3 and earlier versions. (Sign in to  My Oracle Support, click the 'Patches & Updates' tab, enter the patch number 17425397, and click the Search button.
Download the appropriate platform-specific zip file, unzip, and read the 'Readme' file.
Note that you must provide a proper value to a JAVA_HOME environment variable [pointer to the mother directory of the Java /bin subdirectory] in the loganalysis.bat | .sh file and use the -d parameter when running standalone.)

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/loganalysis.sh -h (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\loganalysis.bat -h (on Microsoft Windows).
The output is saved under the
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\diagnostics\reports\
subdirectory.

(3) The Registry Cleanup command may be used (without fear!) to clean up various corruptions which can  affect the Hyperion (database-based) Repository.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/registry-cleanup.sh (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\registry-cleanup.bat (on Microsoft Windows).
The actions are described on the command line.

(4) The Remove Instance Command is only used if there are two or more instances configured on one computer and one of those should be deleted.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/remove-instance.sh (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\remove-instance.bat (on Microsoft Windows).

(5) The Reset Configuration Tool was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2.
It nullifies Shared Services Hyperion Registry settings so that a service may be reconfigured. You may locate the values to substitute for <product> or <task> by scanning registry.html (generated by running epmsys_registry.bat | .sh).
Find productNAME in INSTANCE_TASKS_CONFIGURATION and SYSTEM_TASKS_CONFIGURATION nodes and identify tasks by property pairs that have values of 'Configurated' or 'Pending'.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/resetConfigTask.sh -product <product> -task <task> (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\resetConfigTask.bat -product <product> -task <task> (on Microsoft Windows).

"
Thanks to Maurice for this collection of utilities.

Essbase - FormatString

A look at the documentation for "Typed Measures" shows:
"Using format strings, you can format the values (cell contents) of Essbase database members in numeric type measures so that they appear, for query purposes, as text, dates, or other types of predefined values. The resultant display value is the cell’s formatted value (FORMATTED_VALUE property in MDX). The underlying real value is numeric, and this value is unaffected by the associated formatted value."

To actually switch ON the use of typed measures in general, you need to navigate to the outline properties:
  1. open outline
  2. select properties
  3. change "Typed Measures enable" to TRUE

As an example, I created two additional members in the ASOSamp outline.
- A member "delta Price" in the Measures (Accounts) Dimension with the Formula: ([Original Price],[Curr_year])-([Original Price],[Prev_year])
This is equivalent to the Variance Formula used in the "Years" Dimension.

- A member "Var_Quickview" in the "Years" Dimension with the same formula as the "Variance" Member.
This will be used to simply display a second cell with the same underlying value as Variance - but formatted using Format String hence enabling BOTH in the same report.

In the outline you now select the member you want the Format String associated with and change the "associated Format String" in the Member Properties.
As you can see in this example an IIF statement reading:
MdxFormat(IIF(CellValue()< 0,"Negative","Positive" ) )
has been chosen for both new members.

After applying the Format String changes and running a report via SmartView, the result is:

October EPM patch set updates released

(in via Greg)

Greg has passed me the list of the October patch set updates for the EPM system.

The list reads:

I would be too much to cover all fixes of these patch sets here, and they are covered in the readme files of the patch sets anyway. Just remember to read the installation instructions first. As  Henri mentions on his blog, for some patches more than just one of these patch sets is necessary.

Among the fixed issues we see:

  • A fair number of drill issues with SmartView / Essbase
  • EAS login issues
  • APS enhanced ODL logging
  • 25 Bugs in Disclosure Management
  • 19 Issues in Hyperion Planning
  • and many more

As always we have also updated the list in the recommended patch KM notes under the overview KM Doc:

Available Patch Sets and Patch Set Updates for Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Products (Doc ID 1400559.1)

For OBIEE as a closed system an overview KM note is:

KM Doc 1488475.1 - OBIEE 11g: Required and Recommended Patches and Patch Sets

Although patching and upgrading are two completely separate tasks, that may require attention to detail, and follow different workflows, some of the procedures around patching and upgrading are identical.

I would therefore like to point you to our KM Note: Upgrade Advisor: Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) System Upgrade from 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.x (Doc ID 324.1) as a first reference and starting point to keep your system current.

Standalone Log Analysis Utility

I just had a comment from Development on one of our older posts.

Good news:

The Log file Analysis Tool that was introduced in EPM 11.1.2.3.000 ( read post here ) has now been made stand-alone.

Why would that be important?
Because:  "You can use this standalone log analysis utility to analyze logs from any 11.1.1.x or 11.1.2.x deployments.  It will run on EPM servers or non-EPM servers."
That's why!

It is available as a patch via MOS under the number  17425397

As of the readme, the prerequisites are fairly lightweight and not surprising:

Prerequisites
Any user can run this utility from any machine on which log files are stored.
- Users running the Log Analysis Utility must have execute privileges on the following files:
Windows: EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE/bin/loganalysis.bat
LINUX/UNIX: EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE/bin/loganalysis.sh

- The user who runs this utility must have read permissions on the directory where the log files are located.

The download is just over 2 MB and it includes the readme file. This will not only tells you how to install and use the utility, it also contains the list of available commands.

Sidenote:
The comment on the blog requesting a backport was posted early in September 2013 (our first mention in May).
The answer from Development came in on September 25th 2013. Less than a month to get this done!

Thanks to Fuad and Maurice for making this happen so quickly.
