Java update alert: issue with EAS

(in via Nancy)

Customers using EPM and a web browser to launch the Essbase Administration Services Console will lose the ability to launch EAS Console via the Web URL if they apply Java 1.7 build 45.

Development is currently investigating this issue.

If Java 1.7 Update 45 has been installed, it will need to be uninstalled and a previous version will need to be installed.

Older versions of Java are available in the Java Archive

Though it may work, Java 1.7 is not supported in previous versions of EAS.
(Exception for PSU which introduced JRE 1.7 support in the code line)

Customers running a version of EAS Console prior to need to install the supported version of JRE.

EPM troubleshooting Utilities

(in via Maurice)

Are you keeping up-to-date with the latest troubleshooting utilities introduced from EPM These are typically not described in product documentation, so you might miss references to them. The following five utilities may be run from the command line.

(1) Deployment Report was introduced with EPM (11 April 2012).
It details logical web addresses, web servers, application ports, database connections, user directories, database repositories configured for the EPM system, data directories used by EPM system products, instance directories, FMW homes, deployment distory, et cetera.
It also helps to keep you honest about whether you made changes to the system and at what times! Download Shared Services patch 13530721 to get the backported functionality in EPM

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/ report deployment
(on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\epmsys_registry.bat report deployment (on Microsoft Windows).
The output is saved under

(2) Log Analysis has received more "press".
It was released with EPM and helps the user to slice and dice EPM logs. It has many parameters which are documented when run without parameters, when run with the -h parameter, or in the 'Readme' file. It has also been released as a standalone utility for EPM and earlier versions. (Sign in to  My Oracle Support, click the 'Patches & Updates' tab, enter the patch number 17425397, and click the Search button.
Download the appropriate platform-specific zip file, unzip, and read the 'Readme' file.
Note that you must provide a proper value to a JAVA_HOME environment variable [pointer to the mother directory of the Java /bin subdirectory] in the loganalysis.bat | .sh file and use the -d parameter when running standalone.)

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/ -h (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\loganalysis.bat -h (on Microsoft Windows).
The output is saved under the

(3) The Registry Cleanup command may be used (without fear!) to clean up various corruptions which can  affect the Hyperion (database-based) Repository.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/ (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\registry-cleanup.bat (on Microsoft Windows).
The actions are described on the command line.

(4) The Remove Instance Command is only used if there are two or more instances configured on one computer and one of those should be deleted.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/ (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\remove-instance.bat (on Microsoft Windows).

(5) The Reset Configuration Tool was introduced with EPM
It nullifies Shared Services Hyperion Registry settings so that a service may be reconfigured. You may locate the values to substitute for <product> or <task> by scanning registry.html (generated by running epmsys_registry.bat | .sh).
Find productNAME in INSTANCE_TASKS_CONFIGURATION and SYSTEM_TASKS_CONFIGURATION nodes and identify tasks by property pairs that have values of 'Configurated' or 'Pending'.

Run it from
/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/ -product <product> -task <task> (on Unix/Linux)
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\resetConfigTask.bat -product <product> -task <task> (on Microsoft Windows).

Thanks to Maurice for this collection of utilities.

Essbase - FormatString

A look at the documentation for "Typed Measures" shows:
"Using format strings, you can format the values (cell contents) of Essbase database members in numeric type measures so that they appear, for query purposes, as text, dates, or other types of predefined values. The resultant display value is the cell’s formatted value (FORMATTED_VALUE property in MDX). The underlying real value is numeric, and this value is unaffected by the associated formatted value."

To actually switch ON the use of typed measures in general, you need to navigate to the outline properties:
  1. open outline
  2. select properties
  3. change "Typed Measures enable" to TRUE

As an example, I created two additional members in the ASOSamp outline.
- A member "delta Price" in the Measures (Accounts) Dimension with the Formula: ([Original Price],[Curr_year])-([Original Price],[Prev_year])
This is equivalent to the Variance Formula used in the "Years" Dimension.

- A member "Var_Quickview" in the "Years" Dimension with the same formula as the "Variance" Member.
This will be used to simply display a second cell with the same underlying value as Variance - but formatted using Format String hence enabling BOTH in the same report.

In the outline you now select the member you want the Format String associated with and change the "associated Format String" in the Member Properties.
As you can see in this example an IIF statement reading:
MdxFormat(IIF(CellValue()< 0,"Negative","Positive" ) )
has been chosen for both new members.

After applying the Format String changes and running a report via SmartView, the result is:

October EPM patch set updates released

(in via Greg)

Greg has passed me the list of the October patch set updates for the EPM system.

The list reads:

I would be too much to cover all fixes of these patch sets here, and they are covered in the readme files of the patch sets anyway. Just remember to read the installation instructions first. As  Henri mentions on his blog, for some patches more than just one of these patch sets is necessary.

Among the fixed issues we see:

  • A fair number of drill issues with SmartView / Essbase
  • EAS login issues
  • APS enhanced ODL logging
  • 25 Bugs in Disclosure Management
  • 19 Issues in Hyperion Planning
  • and many more

As always we have also updated the list in the recommended patch KM notes under the overview KM Doc:

Available Patch Sets and Patch Set Updates for Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Products (Doc ID 1400559.1)

For OBIEE as a closed system an overview KM note is:

KM Doc 1488475.1 - OBIEE 11g: Required and Recommended Patches and Patch Sets

Although patching and upgrading are two completely separate tasks, that may require attention to detail, and follow different workflows, some of the procedures around patching and upgrading are identical.

I would therefore like to point you to our KM Note: Upgrade Advisor: Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) System Upgrade from to 11.1.2.x (Doc ID 324.1) as a first reference and starting point to keep your system current.

OBIEE problems with Chrome (update 30)

(in via Akhter)

You may have noticed that OBIEE has a problem with the latest Google Chrome update 30 ( specifically version 30.0.1599.66 ).

I was informed by Support that Development is aware of the issue and we have multiple open Bugs logged for this.

Symptoms may include (but are not limited to):

  • not being able to edit an Analysis in Answers
  • not being able to view the catalog
  • popups are blocked although they are specifically allowed
  • In nqsserver.log, it generates some 'FailedAuthentication : The security token can not be authenticated'
  • When opening the 'Catalog' it just freeze the screen.
  • When opening a report, you get
       'View Display Error'
Assertion failure: criteria at line 437 of
       Error Details
       Error Codes: ACIOA5LN

In case that you do encounter an issue with OBIEE and Chrome, please continue to log Service Requests for the issue at hand. But you may also inform the Support Engineer that you are aware of this being a broader problem.

Patch 16068402 has just been posted to My Oracle Support ( ). Download and apply this patch to OBIEE

For those using please upgrade to latest patchset. The fix is included in and above (so in, automatically).

featuring - the DRM blog

(in via Mel)

From time to time I post about other people blogs, if I think they are worth mentioning.

One of these is the

DRM blog

on our domain.

There are a few reasons for me to promote this blog:
- it looks like DRM does not have the big user base that it should have by any rights
- we do not have a specialist for DRM on our Proactive Support team (hence, rarely blog about it)
- its community is somewhat hidden under  Hyperion Other Products
- and with all the above digging up nuggets like the above blog is difficult enough as it is.

The blog contains details to the typical topics like "Whats new", "latest releases" as well as detailed scripting and setting tips.

So - in order to keep the flag up for this one, I decided to post about it to get you in touch with the right guys.

Just use the comments on articles to get in touch with the makers of the blogs, and chances are that you are already in touch with the right person : )

Advisor Webcast: Hyperion Tax Module

(in via Tanya)

Corporate income tax is one of the largest expense lines on the group income statement.

The tax expense often represents as much as 40% of total profit. Yet, the systems in use to calculate the tax provision - a key element in the financial close process - continue to be a disconnected array of point solutions and spreadsheets that lack the transparency warranted by such material numbers.

Furthermore, the tax provision continues to be a bottleneck in the financial close and consumes time that could otherwise be spent on more valuable activities such as risk analysis and tax planning.

Join us for a webcast; given by Product Management, on

Hyperion Tax Provisioning (HTP) Module
on October 8th.

It will highlight the benefits of this module and a demo will be provided.

This is your opportunity to learn about HTP and how it can benefit you and your company during the financial close process.

As always with Advisor Webcasts - you do not need a Support ID to register - you can register directly via this  webex link as well.

This blog talks about the latest news and upcoming events initiated by the EPM/BI Proactive Support Team.
